Instrument Creation by Darkaardvark

INSTRUCTIONS: Build a fully functioning musical instrument. Provide a recording of it.

Garden-hose horn!

Materials:

Hose
Duct-tape
Plastic funnel
Mouthpiece (optional)

This didn't go as perfectly as I had hoped- I didn't have a full length of hose available for me to consume, leaving me with two problems: It's not as long as it should be, so the sound quality isn't as it good, and I wasn't able to give it the right pitch. But nevertheless, it's a lot of fun and it looks pretty cool.

Instead, I just grabbed two really old hoses/pieces of hose and started to tape them up/together. I added a plastic funnel as a bell, and cut an aperture through the duct-tape I laid over the lead-pipe so it can be played with or without a mouthpiece.

The tone isn't horrible. Obviously you have to sacrifice some quality when blowing through rubber rather than brass. The range of notes is quite good as well, there are only a few notes that it won't hit on the harmonic series- being somewhat out of tune notwithstanding. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a killer on the chops and so spending too much time playing it isn't great. The partials are all in different places (for the handful of you know what I mean) and the quick excerpt that I play took quite a bit of practice to get down.

It isn't really up to the task of playing a full piece, so I recorded a sample of the range and the opening of Siegfried's Call (Wagner).

Hello, level 6.

Let its mellow tones carry you away...

Yes, there's hose in there somewhere beneath the duct tape.

uhm... That instrument looks an awful lot like a device used to consume alchohal

Awesome!

What kind of mouthpiece did you use? French horn?

Incidentally, I've been working on something similar... but you beat me to the completion!

Dear god, I would not drink beer or anything else through that thing. It's not even pretending to be clean.

Yeah, horn mouthpiece.

"I've been working on something similar... "

Sweet. Make it!

If more people do this task, we could all get together and have a home made instrument band

That will be the second part in this series of tasks, YB. Form a band all made of self-invented instruments. :D
