Play Hooky by Darkaardvark, Rao
June 4th, 2008 7:49 PMDarkaardvark:
There's a tradition- I'm not sure if it's purely an American thing, or if it's pretty universal- of the Senior Prank. One last hurrah, a way to stick it to school administration and break some rules. Well, a Senior Prank wasn't practical for me, for a few reasons:
1. Far too many security cameras to count, watching every square foot of the school.
2. It's surprisingly hard to come up with an idea that's both funny but not an inside joke, doesn't cause permanent damage, but is actually worthwhile.
For those and other reasons, a Senior Prank was out of the picture. But hell, I said to myself, why not a Senior Praxis. That seemed like a much better idea. Yes.
So, during the last week of school, Rao and I decided to play hooky and go task. That task will be submitted soon. Consider this a teaser.
A brief pause to discuss the wording of this task. "Forging documents will almost certainly be necessary." I never really figured out what this meant. Are you supposed to forge the documents that prove that you played hooky? Because that'd be cheating. Or are you supposed to forge documents that get you out of school or work? Because, frankly, I'd consider that cheating, too. I can get off school excused easily enough. I figured taking the unexcused absense took a little more drive.
Exactly what we did on our day off will come in the next praxis, but I've included some photos. Perhaps you can puzzle out, or at least narrow down, or location. Suffice it to say that we traveled a non-zero distance. We did, indeed, spend most of our day of tasking.

And frankly, it was worth it. No worrying about getting busted by the school (okay, so we were violating school rules, but that's just a technicality. How else were supposed to complete the task?), no working under cover of night, no silly immature pranks. Just an awesome day of tasking. I highly advise it for anyone still in some form of schooling. Nothing would make me happier than to see a Senior Praxis day become a tradition among students who play sf0. Except, maybe, if they did it at the end of every year.
Now, proof of playing hooky! The video is a start-- I'm assuming that someone with technological prowess can check the date/time on it and confirm that it is, in fact, during school hours.

This screenshot of my online attendance record is further proof- though it's not perfect. The day I skipped was a 'finals day' (though I didn't skip any real exams- stay in school, kids!) and so the first two blocks were stretched out over the day. It shows that I was absent-unknown from 1st block, and no record of absence for second block. Well, I was definitely gone second block, but apparently my teacher didn't take attendance. As for why it isn't counted as an unexcused absence, just 'unknown', I don't know. Maybe I should have tried harder. I guess I would have had to have called into the class and said, "Hey, I'm skipping your class today. I have no excuse."
Anyways, hopefully that proves that I really did play hooky. There was also an automated phone-call, which I tried to keep pressing 'repeat' on while I ran to get batteries for my camera to record the audio, but hung up on me. Automated jerk.
Graffiti

"Rebellion cannot be STOPPED." We were dissapointed that this did not say 'revolution.' Then it would be suitably sf0-related. Anyways, WHERE IS THIS? You'll see soon enough. And no, we did not write this graffiti.
Video Proof!

Uhm, don't show this to the administration? It was a lot gray-er and stormy out than it looks in the video.
Attendance Record

You can tell I don't take a whole lot of unexcused absences. Shocked? It's all about the drive for score.

I've got a pretty good idea what task you were completing.
And hey, it's Cory Doctorow!
I've got a pretty good idea what task you were completing.
Yeah, me too.
i used to skip poetry class to write poems.
p.s. i failed poetry.
I love that. It says something about education.
i am also planning on playing hooky to task sometime soon. not from school and not just for the sake of the playing hooky task, but because lately i can't find any time to do any proper tasking! and SFØ is way more fun than working.
which i'm technically supposed to be doing right now.
but i wanted to say, i think your idea of starting a senior praxis tradition is a fine one. i'm only now starting to realize just how many players in this game might be able to accomplish this.
it's so weird to see you showing up purple now.
that my dear is far weirder to some of us than you can imagine
YOU HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES.
Your proper documentation of your illegal activities will be your DOWNFALL.
Vote for having documents that prove you played real hooky.
Although honestly I'm not sure a few cameras ought to stop a good prank - but I suppose there's a reason you aren't wearing olive.
