Instructional Video by Flitworth
November 11th, 2007 6:12 AMThe Pirates are in the lead! I am now offering to put a point in the SFZero column for each person who provides proof of a donation to SFZero between now and the Dec. 31 deadline. I have already salted the pot for December.
When I first moved to South Korea I kept waking up at about four am for no reason and laying in the dark thinking. On one occasion I somehow followed a train of thought to the belief that if Stephen Colbert were in my position he would force his friends, family, and possibly co-workers to compete to prove their loyalty. I tried on several occasions to put together a video challenge to send to my friends but it never quite felt right. I lack the ability to behave brazenly egotistical with a straight face for more than a few seconds.
When I ran across this task I realized that an instructional video provided the structure I needed to present the challenge. I spent a long time recording more footage in an attempt to emulate The Colbert Report but, after hours of mucking around with recordings opted to go a different route. I am rather amazed that, after the number of hours I put in, this came down to less than two minutes. If you would really like to be meta in your participation I suggest this task.
I am sincere in the offer of a reward.
SF0! Your lead has been stolen from you by Team Pirates! Are you gonna take that guff?

A video update (so much has happened!). If you don't want to also hear about the bug lady and watch me open a point-winner for a non-SF0 competitor for my affection you can ignore it.
I got a conference call from the War Mice!

I had to make some signs to continue the interaction when the mic cut out (see below).
D-Cam

This is what truly made the video conference great. My friend strapped the camera to his head and wandered around and very patiently stood or sat around while people looked at his forehead. I did my best to hook him up by encouraging opportunities for the camera to look down the shirts of the many lovely ladies there.
Failed Beta Score Board

This is an early version of what I had in mind before coming up with the simpler single point structure articulated in the video. The creation of this and my original plan was lacking in organization and vaguely retro-active which meant that it made no sense and resulted in imperfect, yet not wholly random, sticker allocation over points.
Semaphores, XKCD Style

We were having technical difficulties with the sound during the conference call. To fill the time I began, as one friend very astutely noticed, expressing Wuthering Heights in semaphore.
The Score as of November 28th

Team Pirates has taken the lead! It is sending one of its members for parley in February and an official itinerary of proof has been received. Who will take them on? How will they be challenged? Stay tuned!

SFZero's point meter is now at 10 -- outstripping both Ninjas and Pirates combined!
... Actually, that's just speculation.
I'm wondering where the scoreboard is??
I recognize that by voting here, I'm helping SFZero against the Warmice...but I can't resist voting for those video skills, and will more than make up for it with other plans...sadly, there's no Boston group for us to go up against. ;)
Bandit: I knew that was coming. Even as I forced myself to retire in the wee hours I was thinking about what to do. I have now uploaded the new and improved board, which reflects the SF0 vote count as of this moment.
4 stars! We rock!
Is there a pizza party if we win?
I suppose that if you consider a pizza party something "strange and mysterious from the East" it might be arranged. Tentacle pizza FTW!
Seriously, though, I would love to have an SF0 pizza party either here in Seoul or upon my return to the US.
You rock the Asian continent.
Go SF0 team!
Yay team! We're gonna take your family down and prove to them once and for all that you like us better!!
I think it's pretty obvious that SFZero will have no trouble defeating War Mice, Family and Pirates. It's the Ninjas that I'm worried about. Hope this scores us a few points!
The 'SFZERO DAEMONS' pic has been the best thing I've woken up to since moving here! I have updated the scoreboard and bravely fought a member of Team Family's implication that the gift of life should be worth something despite its retro-activity.
I'm voting for the story about the bug lady.
My mother informed me of the following:
"The first "sign" you tried is the ASL sign for "sea turtle". I had some difficulty demonstrating the second sign you attempted to use. Our conversation in sign and oral language related to these became hysterical by all involved - my deaf students, interpreters and me. The closest thing we could come up was "crazed bunny"."
Haha...wow, see now this is cool.
My only regret is that I have but one vote to give to this Praxis.
I know it's not much. But every bit counts, right?
I suppose proof of prior donations wouldn't count because they'd be like retroactive tasking? Due to my family budgeting on a kind of planned-out basis, I cannot really make an additional donation before the end of today. Every bit does count, Dax! I think it's very admirable you gave money to SF0 and I hope everyone does at some point or another. I'm sorry, I'm actually not really comfortable talking about donations publicly. Some people can afford to give and they do, and some people —the very young, the student(s), the indigent, etc—can't.
I know this is a cool idea for an amusing task completion, and I'm going to vote for it. And I further know that nothing you've said criticizes the ones who can't or don't donate. I just want my 2 cents known in this discussion. Ha 2 cents. No pun intended, but it's still funny.
It's not much, but it's a bit from both Lank and myself.
Plus, as I hadn't noticed it before, I've set up a monthly donation:
My theory being, if each of us with a Paypal account donated $1 each every month, we could really ofset the cost of the game for the Professors(SSI), as I like to call them.
5 points for SFZero, and for this video!
