Invent a New Word by Flitworth

January 9th, 2008 4:30 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Invent a new word, come up with a realistic sounding meaning.

Use the word in common everyday sentences; define for those who inquire.

Task is complete when someone else starts using your word.

Derkins, noun,
1) an act so replete with ballsiness, most especially in the completion of a task, that one is in abject awe and compelled to vote.

Example: By engaging the police officers and indicating she had authorization when she did not she pulled a total derkins. I had to vote for the task.

2) an act of fearless defense of creativity in the public domain against traditional figures of authority or figures acting on behalf of social/cultural norms.

3) an act of fearless defense of creativity in the public domain against traditional ideas of social/cultural norms. Displaying clothing, equipment, behavior and language that clearly challenges norms of social/cultural behavior.

Example: Wearing nothing but carrots in public or taking over a fine art museum for Hide & Seek.

Some of us have personal derkins wherein they overcome a fear to complete a task. We go the extra mile and put aside worries to make fantastic completions. Sometimes a derkins is accomplished by brazen dishonesty, but sometimes it is complete honesty that is bravest. There are players who put us in mind of the spirit of a derkins.

I got the ball rolling on this when I was first struck with inspiration and posted it in the comments of Susie Derkins completion. Since the task requires others to use it and it was clearly not spreading of its own accord I expanded the definition and included examples. I should mention that I have no doubt that there are thousands more examples of completions and actions on SFZero worthy of the derkins name but I have only been active for about two months and, although I attempt to dedicate time to investigating the work that I have missed, I have not been as thorough as I believe I should. I would, of course, be happy to be notified of tasks I did not mention that other players feel have pulled a derkins.

Public use of the word on SFZero can be found here, incidentally it is tucked into a fabulous completion you should vote for.

I whole-heartedly encourage the usage of this word.

I am just not good enough with words to comment here properly.

The liquid-love effect.
Flitworth, the player of the always mindful tasks. The one that dares to make the right choices out there too.
If we mortals are good, we might be able to spill some SFØ awesomeness into real life. Flitworth, in contrast, manages to sneak jaw-dropping parts of real life in here, making it even better.
And smiling eyes Mink, so great to have you near to look up to.
