Light Saber by Haberley Mead, Shia Astoria
January 16th, 2008 9:50 AMReading the words 'Light Saber- use light as a weapon' flagged up 'fencing' and 'LED Sonic Screwdriver' in my mind; but on remembering that I don't yet own a sabre, I decided to settle for a 'light-epee'.
Handily, Haberley and I had fencing training that night! So, armed with my trusty Sonic Screwdriver, my sword bag and my handy electrical tape, it was off to find a willing vic- er, opponent.
The result? Well, see below. Considering the Sonic Screwdriver is just a single blue LED, and it was attached at the guard end of my sword, it was still impressively bright! And of course, to really use light as a weapon, I challenged our friend Imogen to an epee match!
Haberley Mead:
Well, what can I say? I flashed 'em!

This use of light was not so much as a weapon in its own right, but more as an addition to a method of fighting. To whit, I had my rather beefy camera flash with me in a back pocket whilst fencing, and at a crucial point in the match I would pull it out with my offhand, hold it in front of me and light up my opponent's face. While they were reeling from the admittedly rather unexpected move, their guard would be down and I could step in to ensure stabbing would ensue.
However, you could consider the damage done to a person's retinas as significant damage on its own (for instance, the fact that they are blinded for an average of 36 seconds afterwards), and could consider using this as a weapon in its own right. Certainly, it would be most useful during a night fight where you and your team are pinned down in a country house, and a werewolf is getting too close for comfort...
Ghost?

This is a darkened version of my flash - understandably it can hurt if you're not expecting it!
Our good friend

The look of pain was slightly later than this, once the message of "oh god, that hurt!" had gone from his eyes to his brain.
need to turn this into a .gif somehow
Download FLV
the sonic screwdriver didn't really help with the fighting...

win! i'm so glad someone decided to do this one.
If you're using Windows, GIF construction set is an easy (shareware) way to turn a series of images into an animated .gif. In my opinion, v. 2.0 is better than whatever the most recent one is. Looks like you can still download it here
If you need to extract the frames from a movie file, I think Virtual Dub has a "save as .bmp sequence" option, or something along those lines.
Not sure I can one-up this one... darn. Good job thinking outside the box with that fencing practice!

Certainly.
Awesome, combining light with an existing weapon is a good idea!
