We Are S.N.I.D.E. We raise our flag to the top of the front page and to the coming era. We are the future of SF0. We challenge all players from every group to remember one thing: That this is just a game. We play for no other reason than to play, and we love the game.

i don't think snide is about the we..... seems to be all about the individual.

not about drive, but about score. period. interrobang.

It is unfortunate that you are having such a kneejerk reaction. there is nothing Destructive about S.N.I.D.E. and I am sorry that you can't see the solidarity of our group to raise our flag as a precurser to our upcoming task completion. take heart. The flag can and will come down just as easily as it was put up. your need for conformity and order will be restored.

idol: It is also rather saddening that you are so attached to the idea of Points that this offends you so fully. Is the reward so much more important to you than actually playing the game?

Bex: this is not your world of SF0 it is our world. Do you suggest that one persons method of play should be valued over all others? perhaps you should hold off your negativity until you have the chance to inform yourself fully.

I only just now worked out how you managed to get this "character" to the top of the high-score page. (Maybe I'm being slow!)

Dead clever. Cheating terribly, but dead clever.

The whole trickster thing makes me feel a bit uncomfortable though. Making other players feel like fools, or making them feel ganged up against, does not make for a fun game.

Also, a big reason why I love SF0 is because the tasks are tasks not dares - dares usually involve a degree of humiliation, they are sometimes quite cruel, and out in public they are usually just seen as a nuisance; whereas tasks just involve doing something harmless and beautiful.

I respect your right to undermine the system and make us rethink our values, but I hope you don't undermine everything that makes SF0 fun.

Dear SNIDE,

In regards to 'kneejerk reaction'.

This term seems to be used to belittle an unarticulated instinct, so let me have a go at rationalising our reactions. I cannot speak for everyone, but I can tell my opinion based upon my observations.

You are playing outside of the rules, my 'kneejerk reaction' would be to flag all your tasks as ill-gotten gains because that is the only way to counter this - an out of game powerplay. But I won't because that would undermine all of Lank's high quailty in-game task. The rules of this game are pretty fluid, we are self governing and organic. Each player that enters or leaves the communty, alters the dynamic of the whole. Some characters are stronger influences than others and SNIDE would be a very radical and disruptive character to live with.
I know that SNIDE is a product of several highly respected players working together, ultimately to expand the game. I know that you have a manifesto that is yet to be fully revealed and that a lot of care and dedication has gone into this new tragectory.

However, SNIDE is overbearing, a cheater and selfish - this is not an evaluation of the meaning of the word 'nihilistic', but how the character has presented itself to us through its actions. You have created SNIDE as a character with zero charisma! Not a loveable rogue, but a power hungry bully.

I do not reject your ideologies (I noticed that some of the tasks you claim as 'existing SNIDE tasks' were ones I created); exhibitionism, daring and cheek will always be a part of SF0's make-up.

But what SNIDE appears to stand for is anarchy and this would be destructive to the game. Without rules and structure it is bloody difficult to be able to create or play. (don't make me cite proof for this, I could go on all day)

Bex is right, this IS her game, and my game, and zemleco's game.

And we reject cheaters.

The character and the tragectory may well be different. The character remains a cheat however.

re: cheaters

I don't think we should necessarily reject cheaters.

I think, as a community, we do reject cheaters, but I often think that's a shame.

Don't get me wrong, we should definitely reject persistent cheaters, but one-off cheaters should be gently challenged or - if they've been particularly original - rewarded.

Consider the following gallery of cheaters. Those who should have been gently challenged rather than rejected: Vicki Venom, Hank Manolo/H K Matic, Grey Ghost. And those who should arguably be rewarded for their cleverness: Spar, me (in the guise of Roger Rabbit), and of course SNIDE.

Having said that, I agree with Mink that SNIDE has so far come across as overbearing, but hey - they've got our attention! As long as they don't undermine what makes this game fun, I'm all ears.

@ Meta: I think perhaps calling SNIDE "overbearing, a cheater and selfish" would be you projecting a personality into an entity, Like the Daemon and the Police, that does not inherently have one. S.N.I.D.E. is not a person but a construct an if you wish to point and accusing finger or brand foreheads with a "C" than you must do it at Lank, YB, myself and anyone else has who added S.N.I.D.E. to a task to ascend it to 1st place. I feel very honored that you acknowledge my respectability (though rather surprisingly considering the number of times I have posted my ballsack on this site) however it seems that you do not respect any of us to trust in us enough to believe that we would not to anything to damage to alter the game in a negative way.

I am very much confused by people having such an adverse reaction to their literal perception of what S.N.I.D.E. Stands for. LT put it very eloquently with the statement...

the last part of biome's mission statement is "We also seek to develop a concrete eating bacteria and release it into the wild." but I can assure you that none of biome's members wish to destroy our cities. I think all the group's mission statements are sort of goofy in their own way. There's also a task called "Pure Evil", which sounds a lot worse than "nihilism", but I don't think frozenhaddock or charlie fish are evil.

A part of S.N.I.D.E's point is to confront and question who we are and what we value as SF0 players and your reaction like a couple others leads me to believe that what you value most is points. Your attachment to this one element of the game has blinded you to the joy and wonder of the the remaining facets of play, some of which just happen to be chaotic in nature as creativity tends to be.

In truth this "stunt" was intended to be only done for a day or two at the most but things were rushed and unfortunately due to circumstances out of anyone’s control or completion has been pushed back. Very shortly we will post and S.N.I.D.E. will be removed from all tasks and return to a level 1. I am confident that once you see S.N.I.D.E. the way that we have envisioned it that all your fears of malice will be quelled. You may not like the group we have created, in that care it is your right to not vote and fates willing if it is put into the game in the next era it is also your right to choose another group.

It is my firm belief that the only rule of sf0 is that there are no rules. This game is the fundamentally and quite literally anarchy. Ignoring that fact and condemning it devalues what makes this game the wonderful entity that it is.

I will vehemently defend what we have done and this thing which we have put so much time and heart into creating because I whole heartedly and very earnestly believe in the value of it..

some kind of a a atavistic instinct a broken cluster of pottery, found after the Market shut up for the night, their sellers and carts taken in The boy's right Mrs. Czolgosz' sleeping head notwithstanding. can't unbreak it but must, something. to be believd. it's a stance, and emergent, can't take THAT away. unless you'll buy it, if you trade for it, buy it yours then and it's owned by intervention of capital. But it's ours, yeah? Fraught, so sorry. sorry for the cruelty.

I apologise.

I spoke with prejudice against SNIDE. I look forward to seeing your completed trajectory of desire and I will probably vote for it, because I vote for hard work and ingenuity.
It has been implied that SNIDE ties into the discussion forum suggestion that the game should ditch its points structure, there is no evidence for this - although your comment above doesn't help - so I apologise if I have jumped the gun on condemning SNIDE for this.

P00n.
Firstly, you have entered SNIDE into the game as a character, I know there are real people behind it, the same way I know the real names and personalities of many other SF0 characters. By interacting with the community you have given SNIDE a slither of personality - no matter how small. I was merely commenting that if I were to create a character to personify my objectives, I'd have made him more endearing... SNIDE could so easily have been presented as a lovable rogue!
You say you are confused by the reaction people have had to SNIDEs ascent to the top of the scale - all I offered was a perspective which might explain it.
Do you really believe that I only care about points? Is there anything about my completions or previous comments that suggest this to be true?
In fact, by climbing to the top without doing a single task, SNIDE appears to care only about points and not about creativity. Not too surprisingly people objected.
I was mostly irked by the way you snapped at Bex in the comments above to be honest, which I guess has little to do with SNIDE as it wasn't 'him' speaking.
By stating that either myself or zemleco only care about points and disregarding Bex's game world, You seem to be having trouble seeing things from other viewpoints.

There are lots of different ways to play this game, which is part of why I love it. You are playing for the anarchy, The Villain was playing for the narrative, I am playing because it superimposes an alternative rule set to real life interaction and, hell, some people are playing for the points. Elevating one facet of play above the others would make the game unplayable for the others. Take away the game structure and this just becomes a list of donkey dares to me and I will get bored and stop playing. I cannot guess at how others would react.
Secondly, you have confused 'play' with 'game' - there is a difference. You cannot create 'play', but it is possible to lay down an infrastructure which can encourage it. Games need rules - games ARE rules. It is how we react within them and against them that creates the chaos and creativity. I care very passionately about this as it is the foundation for the games I create - simple as they may be. (pretty much all end up messily) I agree with you in many respects, but I disagree that the game is 'literally anarchy', this is simply not true.

I did warn you not to get me started on this...

um.. and before I get accused of being mired in conformity, I'm not adverse to replacing the points system with a different rule structure - just with having no structure at all. [/rant over]
p.p.s. Please don't think I'm taking this too seriously, I just enjoy debate!

"ideal representation"

SHUSH why did you say the secret out loud ?!?!

i never thought of it as a noun, but i suppose you're right.

p.s. the secret rules have already been cryptograficated...

p.p.s what society conference do you mean - and are there annals to this conference perchance?

I admire your viewpoint and only wish you were able to make a point without sprinkling it with insults. I've re-edited your comment so I can read it without getting wound up and you are really quite eloquent in places:

an·ar·chy:[an-er-kee]
–noun
3. A theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal and that proposes the cooperative and voluntary association of individuals and groups as the principal mode of organized society.

If SF0 not the ideal representation of this social theory, then I don't know what is.
This argument has come up several times in different incarnations over the time I have been playing. There is always a concern about how others play and is it valid and what will “destroy” the game and how do we keep SF0 pure. The problem with this argument and the absurdity of it is that there is only one way to destroy SF0 and that is to stop playing. Everything else is just change. The game is structured so that it is fluid and everyone in it alters its course. We all have taken great personal ownership over this thing we do for fun. I presented SF0 at a sociology conference as the future of gaming.
I did not disregard Bex's game world.(but) Her way is not the only way and neither is mine.

As far as my confusion of Play and game, I think you are entirely wrong in this instance. SF0 has no differentiation between these two things. the act of playing the game and the game itself are indistinguishable. I am playing right now as I write this. It is a hyper real experience...a simulacra. it exists simultaneously within the real and the unreal.

I have my own feelings about the point structure of the game. I personally think that votes are given too freely and small tasks end up scoring hundreds of points through votes. They are worthy completions but not worth the sheer numbers that they receive when EVERYONE votes. I think this is apparent right now as nearly the entire front page is LV8. I have held off votes for this reason. I will think a task is awesome for what it is but other players have covered it's due with their votes. I can't rightfully however bemoan this. Nor is it my place to tell anyone else how to handle their votes. it is what the game has become and it will change again.

I am sorry if I have sounded aggressive in this discussion. I was truly angered by the reaction but I do respect you all and your opinions as I hope you do mine. beyond all else I see the joy in every key stroke of this game and look to the deeper meaning of every action. I can see how this was misconstrued as negative. I only ask that you look beyond your initial response and try to see what I see. Discussion like this about what the game "is" and "should" be can be nothing but beneficial and shows the level of thought we all put into what we are doing but in the end it is nothing more than academic. The game will be what it will be.

However, if you want a slagging match - I'm game.

I'm intrigued - though not surprised - that you consider it 'touchy feely' to try and not offend people.
It is part of my character to be pious. It is part of your character to be a dick. That is just how we are playing it.

p.s. I don't know what 'sprinkling Equal' means.

i myself am wrestling with whether there is some difference.... snide as αρχος, if we are lucky, or if it is hiding, simply an element of the ηγεμονία.

incidentally a word for power in hungarian is villany..... but luckily not the kind that snide is after.

Otherwise... I do not see University of Asthematics or any other of the groups pooling togethor their completions to amass a single high score. Your group is acting like an individual and then you are individually rebutiling for being treated like one.interrobang29364.png

Anarchy in the SF
posted by Spidere on November 5th, 2007 8:47 PM

It is true that SF0 is something of an anarchy, in that a lot of its structure comes from community action. We choose what to vote for and what to reward. We choose what our purpose in playing is, who we work with to achieve that, and how. We each of us choose to work towards goals which are not all the same.

But we are all of us playing in this game. Part of what makes anarchy work, if it does, is that everyone acts to enforce the rules and to make things "right". In order for this to work, there must be some shared opinion on what is "right", even if not everything is agreed-upon. We each have our own standards we apply, but we must try to respect others' as well. In order for this to be a community of diverse people, we have to work out a set of shared values that let us all play together. Because that's part of what makes this place fun: being able to play together with all of you, who continually amaze and impress me.

A number of us (yes, myself included) were taken aback at the sudden adding of SNIDE as collaborator. It seemed to contradict some community principles that we seemed to play with: you don't get credit for things you weren't involved in. SNIDE wasn't involved in these tasks, wasn't a collaborator you had worked with, wasn't even a separate entity, really. And that somehow made it feel wrong. I think that we pretty much all feel this, including Lank, Yellowbear, and p00n; I don't think any of you really feel that the only rules are the two on the about page. Even you admit that this is only a short-term prank rather than something you want to actually be a part of the game we all play. I'm sure you don't want to see it continue. It feels like it breaks the rules, even though those rules have never been written down (but I've started trying here).

Yes, in some sense, anything we can do is within the rules. But there are many things which any of us could do, but do not--because it would upset this very delicate balance of playing the game. In order for this anarchy to work, we have to have some set of shared goals or shared ideals which we all work towards.

I would much rather see (in the spirit, as I understand it, of anarchy) that we try to show each other what we see and why we are playing, and indeed, try to convince others to play in the same way. I honestly think that our value systems are important, even in this microcosm. By discourse and argument, I would hope to arrive at something better and be exposed to new ways of doing things. But for this to work, we must do so with as little rancor as we can manage (though I certainly know how hard it is to avoid being defensive, when challenged) and not acting to make the game less fun for others (whenever possible). Respect for the ideas of others is not simply words we say; it is actions which we take.

We each of us have the power to destroy other people's goals. Respect for other people's goals and opinions is necessary to keep this place working. Honestly, I'm sometimes amazed, when I think about it, that this place remains as wonderful as it does. There are "holes" in the way the game is structured such that if desired, any individual could effectively destroy the entire system and destroy everyone's game. That no one has done so is testament to how much everyone loves the game and what it allows us to do: to play with other people, to achieve things that others respect, and to share in the amazing achievements of others.

I would say that we should all try to remember that. I want to keep playing with all of you, and I want all of you to keep wanting to play and loving the game.

B-Unit:

Your non-stop mouth drop of lucid filaments on white has the ground-shake mind-quake of your years gone stale; acidic are the plethora of jargon-ish O's and C's and D's that fly from your digital appendages, wrapped in oh so rotten papers and rolled with the series of your hegemonic thoughts-seeping from your ears, out your nose, down the ridges of your spine and into your moistened hands.

A backwards bliss is upon you now.

I had a friend who once got so upset when someone check-mated her in a game of chess, that she violently overturned the table that the chess board was on and stormed away.

Nobody has any broken bones, do they? Has anyone involuntarily lost any money over this?

A major reason that we have cops and armies is because people can't trust each other enough for anarchy to work. Not even in the virtual world!

I promise that as soon as another player (or persona or entity) takes the #1 spot, I won't go postal. Especially if it's part of a task completion.

So what do you like to go by? IDOL? S.N.I.D.E.? SNIDE? Snide? Or are you more for formal names like Society for Nihilistic Intent and Disruptive Efforts?

What's the wreath made out of? Is that hops?

You really tapped into the current culture on this one.

Ah yes, the urban dictionary. Repository of all information true and unadulterated, it is academically cited worldwide. Scientific, extensive, and in its four hundredth eleventieth seventh edition this coming spring, the dictionary will one day surpass the unparalleled importance of the wikipedia. Yes, someday soon.

If you've never utilized this bountiful resource, Wyld Stallyns recommends it wholeheartedly. However, caveat lector:

not all the definitions are actually true.

Dear reader, do not wonder at such a strange object. Express your awe at the ever-multiplying multitudes of tongue-in-cheek verbal mastery. It is clear that the problems of this.... this... book, are in no small part due to its being called a dictionary, rather than a cuntionary. (ask... he's got one.)

CAUTION: If you are the Vixen (see comment), or someone similarly offended by strong or difficult language, you may want to keep this task post out of sight of your wife and servants.

An entrée :
Some more level-headed information for your reading pleasure.

This task post is intentionally submitted to revolutionize your prior perception of just one little word. By channeling the desires of LEWL, and documenting the aesthetical pleasures of not only this word itself, but the articulations of urban-dictionary readers worldwide, the desires of many and multiple trajectories are launched forward.

Let it be known that this humble player only uses such words when referencing historical exits by angered anti-ism-ists.

Y'all are encouraged to do otherwise.

Thus follows a documentation and investigation of the fearsome and alluring word,
by way of the oft-wielded URBAN DICTIONARY...... everything below is word for word as found but has been separated from the surrounding falsity.

In the future, in at least one instance, the falsity will be erased more permanently.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. 732496 up, 1771 down

The word is only insulting to Americans and over zealous feminists who don't realise its beauty.

6. 635455 up, 1934 down

The tastiest meal.

16. 97494 up, 32 down

Thought to be the most effective word in the english language for making one's point. It may also be sprinkled onto everyday sentences to spice them up rather dramatically.

It is often ranked higher in power than both 'fuck' and 'cock' combined.

21. 86205 up, 12712 down

Finest english expletive available, allowing maximum possible offense with the minimum required effort.

36. 81078 up, 573 down

A sweet name for a sweet thing.

41. 52982 up, 111 down

an amazing powerful word, one that needs to be accepted as 4 letters made into a word which describes a beautiful part of the female body or as a fantastic word for insulting people who are really anal!

45. 52982 up, 111 down

Word can be used to describe a tough broad or a hardass. Not neccessarily a derogatory phrase.

50. 49822 up, 3387 down

A term of endearment used between young women in the Northeastern United States. Reflects their reclamation of power through the word's root meaning in the female sex organ. It is usually used in the US as derogatory term for women, wielding the most power for offense of any word in the English language.
Also a term of endearment used between men in UK and Australia.

51. 49271 up, 238 down

Used as a deragatory word towards women, but reclaimed as some as a power word. Giving the word cunt powers like that of bitch. Used to show power, beauty, intellegence, attitude and how fierce one really is. In the process of being reclaimed by women and gay men the world around.

88.3314 thumbs down

Old English derogatory term for a prostitute. Gropec*nt lane - a road in Evenley, Northants, England. Where some went to.... well you get the idea.

90. 2967 up, 16 down

Caring understanding nurturing and tender. I.e. my wife when around me on a daily basis.

"honey....you C"
