Not The intended Use by Not Here No More

February 17th, 2008 12:38 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Use something but not for its intended use.

Well, the reason that I go to dances isn't to dance. It's to gather information about the way the world works. The last one that I went to was the day after valentines day at the mission boys and girls cub.. I went, wearing my usual eccentric garments to tone the weird factor up. (although the weird factor was already toned up because of the people I was with. In other words, my friends are crazy)

So I was at the dance, surrounded by pathetic normals. Honestly there wasn't a person there who was not from my school that I could stand to be around. (yeah, I know I'm kind of biased) So I decided that I would try to learn as much about the way other schools work as possible instead of dancing.

The first thing that I learned was that the world has very bad taste in music. One minute of listening to the music, which has hence been christened "C-Rap" by myself and my friends, I figured out that the people's obsession was lust and objectification of women , violence , racism, and various other unsavory things. I am throughly disappointed with the quality of the mainstream music of the current era.

The people there showed the same kind of outlook. Grinding was commonplace, as well as very "colorful" insults to various groups. (including calling one of my friends "A Mother**** Homo" for wearing eyeliner and some pretty dang awesome boots. that really bugged me.

The next thing that I did in my information gathering errands was to attempt to speak to a member of the mob directly. I did this by danceing with one of the stupidest girls imaginable. here is what I remember of the conversation:

Me: so what do you think of the dance?

Her: It's...ok.

Me: And the music?

Her: I love it!

Me: So, what school do you go to?

Her. (Unintelligible) (sounds like Burke's

Me: Burke's?

Her: No, Synergy.

Me: Oh. Good.

Her: Why?

Me: People there want to kill me.

Her: Why?

Me: Don't want to get into it.

Her: They want to kill me to.

Me: Why?

Her: I used to be a geek and go there.

The rest was her ranting about makeup and other junk. From this brief meeting i can conclude that the teenage world at large wishes to embrace conformity, and hates misfits. (from the geek remark)

Later, I overheard her friends talking about me. this sums up what they said: "He's good looking but wears very strange cloths." This allows me to assume that people are, to put it bluntly, totally freaking shallow. This lack of critique of intelligence and character makes me...kind of sad.

To conclude my observations of my alternate usage of the dance, I would have to state that the average "normal" teenager is an unintelligent, violent, perverted, shallow being. Not that I'm trying to be like Holden Caulfield.

Votes for agreement, similarities and using an event rather than an object.

Is your area the same as here, One school with all the interesting people and then some normal people mixed in, then other schools with boring people?

Pretty much, my school is sort of the oasis for the non-normal.

Same with my college.

I think there are about 20 chavs there and about 1,000 other pupils. I love my college.

Loving the idea of using a social gathering instead of a product for this task - good job!

Holden Caulfield.

Enduring being weird now will liberate you later.

I quite enjoy the perspective which you contribute. Thank you.

Basically what I do at dances is sit and a corner and sulk. Your way is more productive.

Damn right your school is the oasis for the un-normal. I bet not one of us could survive in public school. That one girl sounded like a down right Boch. (my new word! :). God I hope life after school isn't filled with f***ing boring crap like that. I am going to become a hermit and live in canada if life turns into crap.

It seems apparent that people suck all over the world. It's good to know that my school isn't the only place. We try to make people more interesting we really do now moreso than ever. People just don't seem to be interested in doing fun things, there are a select few people who we would say "are up for the craik" but the majority of people just live normal somewhat boring lives.

We will keep trying to fix this though. People need to have more fun and care less about what other "normal" people think. I am gradually begining to think "outside the box". It's awsome!

Also good completion due to it being a social situation rather than an object.
