Physical Representation Of A Virtual Occurrence by Sombrero Guy

May 8th, 2009 2:51 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a public or semi-public physical representation of a virtual occurrence.

The internet is a wonderful thing. First, it allowed me to keep in vague contact with an old friend of mine. Then he introduced me to SFØ and as well as renewing more regular contact with that friend, this allowed me to encounter many amazing people who I would never have known of otherwise. I like to think of some of these as friends, despite no, or very few, meetings.
The internet allows me to keep in touch with these people. While instant messaging services such as MSN and Skype are good, I sometimes find there is not much to say in a long conversation. I can read blogs, such as http://benforbes.co.uk/ or http://minchionable.wordpress.com/ (and they probably don't even know I look at them), but this is a largely one-way method of finding out what people are doing or thinking, and hardly allows discussion at all.
One of the best methods of staying in contact with people, I have found, is social networking sites. This allows intermittant contact via strings of comments on photos and other items posted, while always knowing where you can find people if you really need them. One of the most popular of these, and the one I use, is Facebook.
This is what I decided to represent physically.
The result is almost literally a face book. That is, a book with faces in it. All the pages I made can be seen in the photos.

I would like to add that if I were to actually put every single player I'd like to meet in the book, I'd run out of space. The ones represented in the book are just a small selection.
Most of the photos used were found by simply looking through Player Photograph praxes.

We'll have to do something about that "no collaborations" thing.

Full points.

I love how this celebrates some very cool players.

And you drew attention to Ben and Minch's blogs, which I was not aware of - doubly cool.

Almost didn't recognise myself with long hair there - your facebook needs a better connection, methinks! :P

And the shirts are being made this coming week - my degree had been in the way for a while, but now I'm a man of leisure until September (or when I get a job...)!

You´re like a PEZ dispenser for carefully crafted tasking gems. Talking less is more, in your case, sir. Here, have your theme song.
I hate Facebook

I am honored to be in your facebook.
I am honored that you said Charlie Fish is the UK's answer to me. Whereas I think I'm the US's answer to Charlie Fish.

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

And Lincoln, I don't think there's any way you couldn't get onto any player's list of people they want to meet.

I am honoured to be the first person you met "from the internet" and Im pretty sure I lived up the the standard of oddness expected from such a person. ;)

Awesome task.

You'll be there in July, I presume?

And Adam: you did indeed live up to the standard of oddness expected, and I was pleased about this. Odd is good. I need some more odd people in Bournemouth.
The rest of GY0 also seemed odd, although after meeting Kieran, you all pale in comparison :D
