No Jaywalking by Lank

INSTRUCTIONS: Follow the traffic signals!

Choose a neighborhood with plenty of traffic signals. Walk a path according to their desires, determined using the following rules:

- If there is one walk signal, cross the street in that direction and continue walking straight ahead until the next corner.
- If there is no walk signal, turn the corner without crossing the street, and keep walking straight ahead until the next corner.
- If there is more than one walk signal, retrace your steps to previous corners until the signals take you in a new, clear direction.
- If there are no traffic signals, cross in the direction that you are already facing and keep walking.

Continue on in this way until you either hit a dead end (i.e. you are supposed to walk straight, but there is no more road) or you find yourself back at a corner that you have already visited.

It was a beautiful day for a randomly-directed, meandering walk through San Francisco. I expected to roam around downtown for a couple of hours before hitting a dead end or crossing my own path. But randomness has a way of defying your expectations.

I started at Union Square, arguably right smack in the middle of one of the most traffic-signal riddled parts of town. I figured I would have to encounter nearby Market Street or Columbus Avenue and be forced to meet the challenges of their diagonal paths and multi-street intersections. No such luck. I ended up traveling away from both.

Here is the map of my 3.2 mile journey (click on the image to go to the Google Maps version):

I certainly did not expect to end up heading straight up Hyde Street for over a mile! It just so happened that I hit green lights and signal-free intersections all that way. I got to commune with cable cars the whole time, which was... interesting.

This was an awesome way to check out parts of the city I had not yet traversed. A few too many pesky hills for my taste, though.

See the highlights of my sights-of-SF-heavy trip via the pictures below.

And check out the Pushpins I left over the course of these travels!

David's is yummy. It's a tourist trap, and latkes can go for as much as $25, but I still can't argue with latkes.

They're like cakes (but with oil and potatoes) but take much longer and tend to make you late, hence Late cakes, or latkes for short.

Alsy they are yummy and make you eat many of them. In other words you eat a lot cause they're good (or you eat latkes they're good!).

While the etymology may not be entirely serious (the word is Yiddish) the part about them being yummy is.

It's crazy how they park the cars on their sides on Taylor. I guess you have to when it's that steep.

Still, why would they make the stairs so treacherous? A little depth sure would help.

Pine. PINE!

Which reminds me, I've now been a Bay resident for over a year.

(enjoy the east coast!)
