Seeing Beyond Sight Photo Challenge by Ohrlyeh Totenkinder

May 18th, 2007 6:34 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Seeing Beyond Sight has partnered with SFZero to challenge you to see the world differently - with more than your eyes.

Welcome new users: SFZero is an ongoing game in which you can choose to participate (or not) after you do the Seeing Beyond Sight Challenge.

Click here for new user registration.

1. Blindfold yourself.
(wear shades or tape your eyes shut)

2. Go out in public and make your way in the world.
(go 1 block, 1 hour or 1 roll of film; go with a friend or alone; make up your own process)

3. Photograph things you notice. And, just notice.
(What do you notice differently about objects, people, actions, interactions?)

4. Embrace the whole experience as much as the picture taking.
(Engage. Have a conversation with people you encounter. Take it all in.)

5. Share your story.
(For each photograph write a caption about your experience - a few lines or several paragraphs if you want.)

6. Challenge some friends to do it.
(email them the link: sf0.org/seeingbeyondsight)

Please don't post all the pictures from your shoot, but chose 1 to 3 that are the best images or are most telling of your experience. Caption the photos describing something about your experience - that is as important as the image itself. Longer stories are welcomed and may be added to www.seeingbeyondsight.org.

If you depend on your eyes to get around, then it is hard not to use them. Although you can tell us about how difficult it is to be blind, focus more on what you noticed about the world as you embarked on this journey.

This experience isn’t about blindness – it is about seeing, noticing and paying attention with more than your eyes.

This challenge was inspired by SEEING BEYOND SIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLIND TEENAGERS, a new book published by Chronicle Books.

As far as I can tell, I am the first to post a proof from the recent SF event. And let me say...HOLY CRAP IT WAS GREAT!

I paired up with lowteck who had already done the task himself, but I beleive may have shown up for no other reason than to shake my hand for a ridiculasly uncomfortable long amount of time.

We started out rather lost not knowing where to go or what to do with ourselves. Thankfully we both fell upon the notion to hit a bar. GOOD IDEA! We went into what LT described to me as a "fancy hotel" and got ourselves some drinks.

The bartender asked if we were medical students. Aparently students from a school in the area come in all the time with a myriad of prostetic impedimebts to become empothetic as to the state in which the handicaped or elderly live.

Drinks finnished, I enlisted direction from LT in paying the check and we headed deeper into the hotel. Lowteck suggested that he teach me to play piano, so I stubled up and down short flights of stairs avoiding the afluent insearch of an instrument. We finnaly found one but it was ocupied by someone LT described as "offical looking" so we abandoned the idea and headed back out into the street.

I'm not entirely sure how it happened but we found our way into a mall.

"hey, lets go to the top of the mall!"

It seemed adventurious enough blind folded; scaling the summit of comercialism. yay!

About half way up we sparked the interest of a couple of highschool girls who would not only stick with us for the remainder of both my and Lowtecks blindfolded experience, but return to RX and don the blindfolds themselves to participate in the challenge themselves. impromptu gamers rock!

at some point LT found a red baloon to attach to the blindfold as either a warning to others or just to make the blindfoldee look more ridiculious. I have a suspicion that it had more to do with the latter

The following pictures cronical our 4 adventures in chronological order using two cameras.

After my camera ran out of space LT took the baloonfold

have to say, that I was not nearly as good of a leader as he was. although he did run me into potted plants occasionaly, he never lost me or alowed me to stumble somewhere dangerous. I kept forgetting that even though I had stoped to think or look arroun, he had no idea what i was doing and would continue to wander off. .....at times into walls, or angry drunken men at bus stops. We were about half a block away when we heard yelling comming from behind us. I spouted an "oh shit!" as I turned around to see LT cringing as an elderly man about half his height was jabbing a gnarled finger at his head and screaming about sense and manners. I mixed my apologies in eaquil amounts to both LT and the man he ran up on as I lead a still shrunken Lowteck off.

after reviewing the pics i found that LT had an amazing natural tallent for blind portraiture. where as my pictures of "not people" were better.

review and tell me what you think!

That was me right after LT put the baloon on my head. it was a grudging acceptence of looking stupid with a baloon on my head.

Dude, awesome, I love this task!
