Homonym Pictures by Møuse

August 24th, 2006 10:34 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take pictures showing two things side-by-side that sound the same when spoken but are in fact very different.

You should do this for at least three homonyms.

When i first set out on this task, i was naive to the homonyms that surround us. "Piffle!" i thought, i shall tame these homonyms and harness their juicy powers, and so i set about it.

My first stop was to acquire a proper definition of a homonym in order to sort out what was legal in the rules. Unfortunately the proper definitions of these things do not quite match. Some saying it had to be spelled the same, some saying it didnt. Then there came the murky territory of homophones and homographs. So to bypass all of this, worried my brain may start working, i decided to choose the one that allowed me the most possibilities: "One of two or more words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning"

Second stop was to come up with some cracking homonyms. It was around this point that the homonym craze began to take me over, everything i looked at i would mull over in my mind and try to construe some other meaning for the word, my best being "socket and a sock kit". After a long night of this wordplay mania i retired to bed at around breakfast time, with a list by my pillow.

The next step was to actually go out and catch these wild homonyms.

By the end of the task, romping around in Richmond park, i was consumed by homonyms, i couldnt stop finding them and trying to photograph them. I knew i had to stop when a young buck appeared out of the bracken behind me a few metres away, stared at me in an evil manner, and my first reaction was "Why didnt i bring a US dollar!". A much safer reaction would have been "Oh dear, i should probably get out of here, he looks kind of angry that ive been annoying his lady friends with some bread based ingredients."

Preparing for the final homonym

Preparing for the final homonym

This was the homonym i had been looking forward to doing all day, while doing all the others i had picked up some cheap flour in town..

I made this, and a mess

I love dough, I also love making a mess, so double bonus. Annoyingly just as i finished, it started to rain heavily, and didnt stop all night. So into the fridge went the dough.

Now, the hard part is trying to get some freezing cold dough off your hands in the middle of a field.

Cheers! The trouble was the deer kept on running away from various things.. small dogs, malicious children, possibly a crazed eccentric englishman weilding a lump of dough. I do have a small video of it which i might put up but its really only me zooming in on the dough, then on one of the does. Not exactly oscar winning material.

I looked at this task and thought, this is funny, I like it, why haven't I voted for it? and pressed vote. Then I remembered it was because I was hoping to overtake your score whilst you are away. Grrrr..... Stupido!
