Photo Competition Number 1 by MsGoblinPants Extraordinaire, TechnicallyNina Tasks Sometimes, Julian Muffinbot, Dela Dejavoo, meredithian, auntie matter, Mr. O.
March 22nd, 2008 2:34 PM / Location: 41.903331,-87.65235Team Popsicle consisted of Julian Muffinbot and Technically Nina. Although Julian's attempt to make Nina lie down in the snow and make a snow angel failed, we succeeded in not only taking our full set of pictures but also going to Goose Island's One and Only Shrimp House, just barely making it back in time. Team Popsicle encountered some cops as Julian climbed on some freight train cars sitting in the middle of the street, but the cops just drove on by without even slowing. As other FOEcakes members mentioned when we returned to the meeting place, it was both interesting and saddening that we caught no shit from authorities, because Goose Island is very close to the Cabrini Green housing projects. White, artsy looking people taking pictures of industrial things did not raise an eyebrow but we have the feeling that if we had been black or appeared to be Cabrini residents we would definitely have attracted negative attention.
Team Andrew, consisting of Deladejavoo and the Defiler, split with the pack just after the bridge and bounded through the beautiful spring evening (second day of spring to be exact, can't you tell from the snow, note the text picture in particular). All potential portrait subjects were highly cooperative, one took down sf0 website info and the other requested we leave a hard copy of the portrait on the windshield of his truck some day. We did have a couple harrowing collisions with Team ShinyHappySleepy and Deladejavoo nearly got pecked to death by some very scary geese. On the up side, the Chicago Waste Management Security waved us by, and though our feet got very wet, no chillblaines were had.
Team ShinyHappySleepy was the best team by far (LIES), comprised of Meridithian, MsGoblinPants, and Mr.G. We were very prepared from the start--Meridithian had printed out a detailed map and annotated it. We took a lot of pictures of shadows, reflections, and windows, none of which came out. Several times during the competition Mr.G. felt the call of nature and pissed on it. Several other times during the competition Meridithian felt the call of Art and sprinted off to take photos of angry geese and fluttering plastic. We spent a great deal of time on a ramshackle bridge, which thankfully did not collapse under our weight (although if it had, it would totally not have been Wrigley's fault). Both of our cameras ran out of batteries, so we headed home and beat the other two teams back to base by at least five minutes. VICTORY!
psychonina

This photo is not for the competition, it is just Nina looking kinda sleepy/crazy in the snow (that she refused to make a snow angel in).
julian on a freight car

This photo is also not part of the competition. Julian climbed onto a very exciting freight car sitting on the tracks in the middle of the street.
Team Popsicle - Text

Team Popsicle's entry for the Text photo. The photo itself, artistically, is not that much, but we encourage the viewer to consider the actual words of the text, as they are awesome.
Team Popsicle - Portrait

Team Popsicle's entry for Portrait. This dude was very cooperative in letting us take his picture. He had started to take his head lamp off but we convinced him to put it back on and stand next to his truck.
Team Popsicle - Wildcard 1

Team Popsicle's first wildcard: snow on one of the bridges leading onto Goose Island.
Team Popsicle - Wildcard 2

Team Popsicle's second wildcard: We do not know what this is but this picture totally looks like a video game.
Team Popsicle - Wildcard 3

Team Popsicle's third wildcard: Nina does yoga poses next to a very reflective puddle.
Team Popsicle - Wildcard 5

Team Popsicle's fifth wildcard: Headless mannequin in the Mercedes-Benz store.
Team ShinyHappySleepy--Black&White

...We followed the tracks to an abandoned warehouse where the geese were congregating. We didn't overhear much, and understood none of what we overheard, but when the geese looked ready to move, we left quickly, and felt lucky.
Team ShinyHappySleepy--Text

The ricketiest bridge in existence may kill you, but it won't be Wrigley's fault.
Team ShinyHappySleep--Wild Card 3

This goose was shunned by the other geesen, and was actually very angry. Somehow, Meridithian captured his one calm moment.
Team ShinyHappySleepy--Wild Card 5

Wall-mounted fire hydrant? Wall-mounted scuba helmet? We may never know.
Team ShinyHappySleepy--MsGoblinPants's face

I pushed my face into the snow to get a reverse-mask look, but it didn't come out well. Also, there was a crust of ice on the snow that *hurt* to push through. Ouch!
Team ShinyHappySleepy--Meridithian's snow angel

Meridithian was moved by the Holy Spirit this Good Friday to create a corporeal manifestation of one of God's messengers.

Sideways and only four seconds long, this still captures the effulgence and balletic movement of the plastic sheeting.

The VOTE is for team ShinyHappySleepy, for genius in color and spacial composition.
But the other two were also quite awesome! Well done FOEcakes... your photographic research of the region may prove useful to you on April 19th.
Thanks for posting the last two photos, Meridithian!

My favorite wildcards from each team:
Team Popsicle: Videogame-y hovering sphere
Team Andrew: Pile of alien tentacles, Geese
Team ShinyHappySleepy: Wall-mounted scuba helmet
Best Captions: Team ShinyHappySleepy, for both "Mysterious flap is mysterious" and "A giant's creepy sex toy. Or possibly an abandoned jackhammer."
Lots of great photos, and interesting subjects, all around, but Mystery Flap takes the cake.
Were the hanging sphere and the giant shoe both taken at the Waste Management facility? I wonder what they're up to in there. . .
Completely objective votes on my actual favorite photographs.

Hmm... Video doesn't work for me. But awesome pictures nonetheless. Vote for the videogame-y picture, and the wall-mounted Big Daddy head.
