Documentary Defiance by Myrna Minx, Clove
November 14th, 2008 11:28 AMThat's a cute little symbol, there.
I mean, it looks non-threatening enough, but...
What if it's serious?
I guess... I'll let you know if I get a Cease-and-Desist letter. Because I... really want to be the voice of the Book-on-Tape.
A few years ago I asked one of my oldest and dearest friends, Clove, if there were any books that had changed her Weltanschauung, and she recommended Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. I purchased it, and read Atlas Shrugged, Bluebeard, and Still Life with Woodpecker instead (I am a novel fiend, they are my one sanctioned form of escapism). Now I am finally reading the book- and I want to share it.
I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to podcast; I am not sure if I am doing it properly, but the recordings can at least be heard on the blog, if not on your iPod. Chapters 1-6 have already been posted as two separate audio files and I intend to read the entire book to whomever would like to hear it. Now I don't suffer any delusions as to being some kind of great reader, radio voice, or story-teller- I just want to do it. And if you happen to enjoy it, it will certainly be on account of the great story.
Remember, this is my first time reading the book, so if you listen along it will be an experience we share. And if I am forced to remove it and you have actually been listening- my deepest apologies, but I won't be paying tens of thousands just to read a paperback out loud.

Best thing ever. I fell asleep listening to this. So soothing. I had the best dreams.
By the way, you're in my karass, and SFØ is our wampeter.
I loooooooooooove it! Books are not easy to come by here. They are censored, limited quantities and expensive as hell.
This is what I'm doing tonight. :)
You are beautiful!
MM, you're mistaken--though it is a good story, I do also enjoy the way you read it.
Inky--I managed to download the mp3 by subscribing to the blog's RSS feed; in google reader each post has an 'original audio source' link, and through 'save link as...' it's mine.
And now it's 4am and though there's no typewriter for my flatmate to complain about I really ought to get some sleep. Chapters 6-9 can wait for tomorrow.
I can't see enough to use the computer tonight so this is a life saver, thanks!
Susy, are you diabetic?? take care of yourself, no, twice as good of care of yourself as any of us would normally take care of ourselves. Three times.
I have a hangover. One of those grown-up hangovers where everything that isn't dark and quiet hurts. You have saved my Sunday afternoon.
I want you to have started a trend. I would love to hear different people read their favourite books. I wonder how long it will be before the cease-and-desists arrive?
(I dimmed my monitor to write this message.)
Well there was this task.
I'm game for doing Herzog's walking diary. Has the added benefit of being out of print and hard to find.
Possibly also the first chapter of the second section of Hopscotch. The whole book is great, but that chapter works on its own. 6(?)pages of melancholy brilliance.
Oh wow. I read this a long time ago, and getting to hear it will be just as cool. You are going to be keeping me company while I model. Yay!
oh, neat! I am delighted that people are enjoying this. I have been away from the internet while traveling, but more installments are coming soon.
thanks , everyone.
New player Clove reads a short story by Tom Robbins entitled, Redheads.
I was having trouble turning my brain off tonight, and then realized I could just turn this on and let myrna read me a bedtime story. So perfect.
and for granfalloons
[edit 8/23/10] Now please oh please oh please finish it!?!
I love being read aloud to. I can't wait to put this on my headphones. I'm not exactly sure how to get that from your site to my shuffle, but.... it will happen.
