Seeing Beyond Sight Photo Challenge by Devil Duck

November 2nd, 2007 4:07 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Seeing Beyond Sight has partnered with SFZero to challenge you to see the world differently - with more than your eyes.

Welcome new users: SFZero is an ongoing game in which you can choose to participate (or not) after you do the Seeing Beyond Sight Challenge.

Click here for new user registration.

1. Blindfold yourself.
(wear shades or tape your eyes shut)

2. Go out in public and make your way in the world.
(go 1 block, 1 hour or 1 roll of film; go with a friend or alone; make up your own process)

3. Photograph things you notice. And, just notice.
(What do you notice differently about objects, people, actions, interactions?)

4. Embrace the whole experience as much as the picture taking.
(Engage. Have a conversation with people you encounter. Take it all in.)

5. Share your story.
(For each photograph write a caption about your experience - a few lines or several paragraphs if you want.)

6. Challenge some friends to do it.
(email them the link: sf0.org/seeingbeyondsight)

Please don't post all the pictures from your shoot, but chose 1 to 3 that are the best images or are most telling of your experience. Caption the photos describing something about your experience - that is as important as the image itself. Longer stories are welcomed and may be added to www.seeingbeyondsight.org.

If you depend on your eyes to get around, then it is hard not to use them. Although you can tell us about how difficult it is to be blind, focus more on what you noticed about the world as you embarked on this journey.

This experience isn’t about blindness – it is about seeing, noticing and paying attention with more than your eyes.

This challenge was inspired by SEEING BEYOND SIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLIND TEENAGERS, a new book published by Chronicle Books.

I thought that this should be done alone and spontaneously for it to bring its trueist experience home. I had just gotten off of work, and decided I could do it now. I borrowed a linen from work, and folded my five dollar bills separately from my ones. I walked to the corner store and bought a disposable camera and then blindfolded myself in the store. I had the clerk take my picture and I began the experience. I felt awe, fear, helplessness, kindness, philanthropy, anger. I was helped anonymously by callings of direction to avoid, curbe, cars, and intersections. I was insulted and harrassed by delinquents of all varieties, they anonymous as well. I enjoyed the experience in a way I did not expect. Check out the pix and enjoy!

P.S. (In response to Loki's comment)
Upon enterning the bus and the driver refusing my fare, my hand was lightly held and I was led to an open seat. The person leading me had old, small, and soft hands. I requested to take a picture of them but there was no answer. I can only assume that the person was deaf or did not speak English; the latter being more probable. Later, the helping hand was replaced by a woman who chewed grape bubblegum.

The general consensus of parents answering their children's inquiries as well as speculation among friends is that I was either practicing for an upcoming surgery, or that I had recently had a surgery.
These recurring snippets I found interesting.

As for most people on the street...
I was largely ignored or otherwise barely commented upon. The ones who talked to me directly were mostly in the Upper Haight, where I happen to live. And mostly it was negative.

P.P.S. (also a side note in response to Loki's comment) Quite a few people, during the experience as well as upon hearing of my exploits at a later date, said that only a man would be able to go alone. I do agree partly. ...

If there are any women that would like to emulate my individual experience, I would be happy to snap photos and follow for your protection at a distance. Let me know

I heard a little bit of saxamaphone whilst waiting for the bus. I am pleased I managed to get him in the shot. He is just to the right of the street sign.

Did not make me pay even though I told him I am not blind; could've been impatience at me fumbling to find the bill and change deposit. He dropped me off at Masonic and Hayes. He coincidentally just got me turned around and lost.

I don't know where the hell I was at this point. I headed downhill toward Fell, but got sidetracked.

Some philanthropic volunteer group that passed me up when I was about to cross Fell st. They felt bad and then came back to walk me to to Haigt and Ashbury. I think the guy in the middle held my hand until he passed me off to one of the girls.

Excellent tasking! And wonderful documentation!

You've been biding your time, Mr. Duck, so I'm glad to see you back on the praxis...

Buying the camera and then blindfolding yourself in the store immediately is a nice touch.

How did the bus interactions go? Any trouble finding and negotiating the door, or finding a seat inside?

What were people's reactions like on the street? Did you answer any questions about what you were doing?

If you ask me, anyone who tried this outdoors without either a friend or a stick crazy. (That's not to say crazy is a bad thing. . .)
