Night Photography by Thain Stormbringer

INSTRUCTIONS: Explore your neighborhood in deepest, darkest night.

Share photographs and other impressions of your exploration.

After looking at all the great results for this task so far, I decided that it was time for a more rural take on things. Since I am staying with my parents this week in prep for our move to Oregon, this seemed like the perfect chance. The neighborhood I grew up in has a total of 9 houses in it and the town has a 3 acre min. for house plots. When you step out the door most nights in the winter, the only things you hear are the wind and the moan of the frozen trees. I find it to be very peaceful, if a bit cold and lonely (it is Arkham after all). Given the setting and the fact that it was pretty cloudy for most of the time I was shooting, light was a serious issue. Most of these shots were between 10 and 30 seconds of exposure time and the focus on several of them is pretty weak since I couldn't see anything through the viewfinder to judge focus by. I find that the full screen view works best with the really dark shots (such as the first three) so if it looks like a shot of nothing, give that a try.

This is the large maple tree in our back yard

The glow in the distance is the light pollution from Worcester, MA

I enjoyed the melt pattern that had formed on this side of the house as a result of the brick chimney. The faint tracks on the right are from cross country skis.

I just had to get a picture of the lawn buddha

After finally getting a Buddha photo, I decided to do a little more play with the flashlight on the maple tree

More light painting with the flashlight. I liked the footprints heading off into the darkness, it fits the setting well.

I like the illusion of a lake reflection in this shot. In reality the reflection on the bottom is the roof of a pickup truck.

Another shot from the car roof. As you can see in these last three, there is not much else in the neighborhood.

The glow in this shot is light pollution from the town of Barre, MA

This is a horseshoe pit, shot from ground level with a flashlight beam from above. Also one of my personal favorites. I enjoy the snow creeping in from the bottom left.

This was the creepy part of my wanderings. There was total darkness on all sides, and the trees in this area were squeaking with the sound of tiny demons...

So I guess our neighbors all leave multiple lights burning all night. I can only assume this is to scare off robbers, even though the town has a crime rate around .00001% (not including mythos related crime)

Another neighbor's house with lights on...

This house actually does have a pond in front of it. I am a little disappointed that the guy has not created a giant ice phallus in the middle of the pond like he has in previous years. That's right....a giant ice phallus.

I call this one, "Realizing you still have your camera set for a 30 sec. exp. but thinking that the results of this mistake are really cool".

I was really happy that the moon finally came out before I when to bed. The orange color was amazing.

Close up moon shot. The focus and detail are kinda crap, but it was worth for the color

30 second exp. I enjoyed the drag effect that I got with the moon on this one.

There are some beautiful shots in there.

I also find it cool that your moon came up at about 2:30 over there and here in L.A. it came up at about 4:30. Don't ask what I was doing up at 4:30.

Thanks!

I love the fact that we are so aware of the sunrise/sunset, but the movements of the moon go almost unnoticed (unless you happen to be buddhist or wiccan). So much of our life and culture is influenced by the sun, but the moon just seems to sneak around with its own agenda.

Mythos related crime?

Yeah, sometimes the weird looking folk from Innsmouth come in on Joe Sargent's bus and look for some Arkhamites to take back to Innsmouth and "party". That's what keeps Arkham's population so low.
