We still wait for the mead. The one gallon jug will be tested soon I think, but the five gallon has many months to go. Instead of a balloon, these have simple air locks with a little bit of water in them. Gas rises, the water bubbles, and the gas vents. Your grand ma ma sounds awesome. My grandfather used to make fantastic fig jam.
I made barley wine/champagne prior to this. A very simple method, without any kettle cooking, and did not wait long enough before bottling it and trying it. The rest of it now sits, waiting for the day it will be less active.
Vote for mead. (As a fellow mazer, how can I not?)
What style of mead is it?
The small is a Traditional, while the larger one is technically a Cyser, as it contains some apple juice.
One of my friends made mead for our wedding (and later for his wedding). The bottling step was hilarious, as it seemed to involve sticky liquid going everywhere except where it was supposed to go. I hope you have a nice ferment.
Thanks Rongo Rongo. Well, i'll be in Africa for the bottling, so i leave the incompetence to my giant friend. It'll be him spilling sticky stuff everywhere.
Did you drink the mead on your honeymoon, as is intended?
My grandmother used to try and make elderberry wine like this (after she'd hand picked the wild elderberries off of her old mine claim... unfortunately long lost back to government lands). Only she used the balloon method (putting a balloon over the top of the jug so that the expanding gasses from the feeding yeast/bacteria would have a place to go). I was too young to know if any of her jugs ever turned out well (her elderberry jam was to die for though). How did yours turn out?
