Leave Clues by Edward Cage, LSK

April 30th, 2008 4:03 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Leave clues.

A friend and I left chalk arrows over a 2 mile stretch promising treasure at the end. It led to the beach, where we, being otherwise treasureless, buried the remaining chalk. Of course, the journey was the real reward - we made sure to include amusing messages as often as possible. Around halfway through, police pulled over - and asked if we were doing graffiti. We showed them the chalk, and one of the officers laughed.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone followed our trail. On the way back, we took the trail backwards, and nobody was following it.

Our route.

The majority of the documentation here is in the form of photos. I selected some of the best out of the over 100 taken (we took one of every arrow!) This means, of course, that many merely good arrows are not in here... Nonetheless, enjoy!

The first arrow, setting people on their merry way.
This arrow was already on the ground when we got there.
Two paths diverged in a park...
Oops, wrong one. Go back and try again.
This treasure carries with it a tremendous curse... a yellow skull.
The machinations of hopscotch, with lava added.
Lava Leaper - The Game
This arrow was around 100 feet away from the light.
Over the fence and through the hills
We'd be fools for not following our own directions.
Just in case you'd forgotten.
Manhole #1
This was around 1/3 of the way there.
The X was already there.
Manhole #2
Between this photo and the last, many mediocre photographs were skipped, so a sense of distance might be thrown off. This was around 5/8 of the way there.
The arrow goes all the way across.
"Both ways!"
"You can't have it both ways!" "Yes, I can."
Manhole #3
Oh, man! I can't wait.
Manhole #4
Meta.
Then, of course, you do the hokey pokey...
Simple enough.
Almost...
It's not too late to turn back!
The last arrow
X marks the spot.

What was the buried treasure?

'twas the remaining chalk. As noted in the description, we didn't have much else on us.

OK. Fair enough. I like the time and work that went into this. I'd just rather there be some treasure that was unique or especially cool at the end of 1.8 miles of walking (and jumping fences).

Isn't this more "Exquisite Derive"?

It wasn't quite a derive because we had a route in mind from the start.
