Player Portrait by Magpie

January 21st, 2008 9:15 PM / Location: 37.755419,-122.4414

INSTRUCTIONS: Paint a fellow player - we'd really prefer that you use their player photo as your model, though. Any medium/style, but let us know what you end up doing with it.

I trained as an illustrator so in the spirit of the game I decided to use a medium that is fairly unfamiliar to me to complete this task, photoshop. I usually just use it to change, crop and correct images. I rarely use it as a medium of it's own. I chose to do Lara Black's player photograph because I thought that it was sweet. This was done pretty much free hand, the only thing that I took from the original was a quick out line sketch. I actually enjoyed what photoshop could do in representing an approach akin to painting with oils. I used the same techniques that I use when painting with real oil paint, and achieved a similar, albeit more naive look. I think that I could do much better given time, as with all new mediums.

Warning, it may take a while to upload. If it is taking far too long, let me know and I'll size it down.

Yeah, PShop is actually a great painting tool. I've loved using it in the past. (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/49/151535432_d405ce83c9_o.jpg)

I love how free your brush strokes are, how you let the light make the detail. Nice work!
