First Impressions by Alana Abbott

January 25th, 2008 6:39 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Introduce yourself in a novel way.

Hi. I'm Alana Abbott, and below this text is a picture of my first novel:

Illustrated by the lovely Lindsay Archer (who created my user icon as well), Into the Reach is the first novel I had published. Despite its being fictional and not about me in any way, you can still learn a lot about me from the story.

1) I'm interested in the concept of redemption, and the struggle toward living up to the expectations you set for yourself.
2) I'm interested in crises of faith and coming out the other side stronger in what you believe.
3) I like fantasy novels, or I wouldn't write one. :)
4) I also enjoy martial arts, and try to make combats believable, often choreographing them with my husband/sensei.

From the back jacket copy of my second novel (and the text on my website), you'd also learn the following:

Alana Joli Abbott is the author of two novels, Into the Reach and Departure, and is the writer for Cowboys and Aliens: Worlds at War. Her work has been featured in roleplaying games, including Chronicles of Ramlar and Steampunk Musha. Her love for fantasy and science fiction has led her to many diverse pursuits, including traveling to visit ancient ruins in Turkey, Greece, Ireland, the UK, and Mexico, singing madrigals, studying stage combat, and practicing kempo karate with her husband. She lives near New Haven, CT.

Into the Reach. By Me.

Into the Reach. By Me.

I describe the story as a tale of four former heroes whose lives have been thrust into turmoil by their mistakes. They travel to the Reach, a place where people go to be forgotten, only to learn that they can't forget who they are. They must discover how to become heroes again.

Cool, I know you and I still learned something from this introduction.

Well, authors are "literal".

I love the fact that an authour actually took this task literally. Nice introduction too.

Hey, a very nice way to learn more about someone I've been meaning to get to know! (You and I have plenty of contacts in common but I think we've only met once, at AnonyCon?)

Cheers for a fellow writer, and for identifying the themes and motifs in your work. :)
