Contents of a Character's Wallet by avidd opolis

June 3rd, 2006 11:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Jack Finney's short story, "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket", the character - clinging to the side of a building - imagines what the world will think of him if they only have the contents of his pockets to consider.

Empty your pockets, your wallet, your purse out onto a table- tally the contents and tell us what the world would think of you, if they had only those effects to consider. Then, decide upon one thing to add to the contents of your pockets, your wallet, or your purse, which will better enunciate the truth of your person to the world.

I emptied my pockets, wallet, and the chrome bag i always carry.
Inside were the following boring items:
a wad of cash and loose change
driver's liscense
student ID - gets me in to museums
2 business cards of my own
library card
health insurance card
an expired muni transfer
a recipt from brunch
a check
keys
a phone number for ajazz workshop
two types of lip balm
breath drops
my ticket to coachella
a buzzed bee placard someone had scrawled all over
credit card and 2 atm cards
a check
a friend's business card
a bart card
3 "Love Back" stickers waiting to happen
a roll of red duct tape - for emergency use
2 button batteries for a microphone
janky ipod earbuds
revolutionary communist propoganda
a michael brecker programme from my grandma
a metal tube

Based on those contents, a person would learn roughly zilch about my.
The contents are always in transition, depending on what i'm working on at the moment.
I added the following item to my chrome bag:
A copy of buckminster fuller's book "i seem to be a verb"
so that if anyone finds it on my dead body, they will have some idea about the kind of weird stuff i appreciate.

"they will have some idea about the kind of weird stuff i appreciate"

a fine sentiment from a cosmic citizen of the spaceship. for this very reason, i tote a hardcover large-print copy of ulysses in my messenger... it also builds leg strength when climbing bart staircases.
