Make it Soft by Casey N
March 19th, 2013 1:00 PMSome back story:
I had never sewed before, but for my anniversary with my boyfriend, I figured I'd make him something awesome.
Usually, I bake customized cakes or cook fancy gourmet meals for loved ones during celebratory events, but my boyfriend lacks both a sweet tooth and a taste for fancy food.
The only other options I had were to buy something, sculpt something, or to venture into something I have never done before and sew together a plush. I chose to get out of my comfort zone and make something squishy!
I decided to make him a Companion Cube for two reasons:
1. The first game we played all the way through together was Portal 2. We loved it.
2. We were going to be apart for a month or so after I planned on giving it to him, so I figured he could use a companion. :)
It took me an exhaustive amount of time, during which I completed more than 30 episodes of Pokemon, courtesy of Pokemon.com. I literally ran out of episodes to watch on the website!
I did everything entirely by hand using:
- Felt (I read it was a good material to use for beginners)
- Gray and pink thread
- Needle
- Fabric glue (to keep the smaller bits in place while sewing)
- Scissors
- Stuffing
For my first venture into plush making, I'm happy with the results!
Oops

While sewing the squares together, I poked the needle straight through my nail on accident. Just an indicator that I needed to cut them!

Wow, thank you so much for the encouragement.
I actually read quite a bit of your stuff before posting, to make sure I knew what I was doing - since you seem really active in the community! :)
Nice to meet you too! I'm going to Boston for PAXEast this weekend, so I hope to get a bunch of tasks complete while i'm there.
Casey!
I WISH I COULD GO TO PAX!
I am not as active as I used to be, but an flattered :D
I am now double excited for your next praxis because they will be PAXis!
I love the cube! It brought back some memories of making a pillow (probably really my mom did but she was kind enough to make me think I had made it. ) when I was a child. It was patchwork from a lot of old clothes and I called it "Friend pillow".
This man here is named after the companion cube.
I LOVE the way you described everything, included pictures, showed the process and told a story (and you got it right your very first task.)
Can't wait to read your next praxis
Nice to meet you
Pixie!
