Your Dear Friends by Rainbow Bright

June 7th, 2007 11:39 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Convince a group of at least 10 strangers (excluding SF0 collaborators) to take a group photo with you. Document the methods used and post your photo.

As I stumbled upon this task today, my first reaction was, "that should be easy." I figured I would simply go down to the local coffee shop and grab the people sitting outside to be in my photo. As I gave it more thought, I decided that I could do better; I grabbed some markers, paper, and a few friends and quickly made letters spelling out "What's SF0?"

I grabbed my letters and my camera and set off to Martha's Coffee. To my dismay, there was one lonely woman sitting on the bench outside. I sadly bought my coffee and set off for a more popular place at this time of day. It was when I got to the bus stop on Castro/Market that I realized that this task was going to be trickier than I thought. I quickly counted and saw enough people for a quarem and ran across the street. I jumped in front of them and explained what I needed them to do and with questioning glances, enough people agreed. Unfortunately, I handed out the letters to the sound of the bus pulling up behind me and my ten strangers pushing the letters back in my face. All except the guy with my "W." That pesky "W" thief. He actually took my "W" with him onto the bus. Why would he want my "W?" A suvenier, I suppose. I would not let him ruin my attempt. I walked around looking for another crowd of people and came up dry...back to the bus stop. Again, ten people. I run over and try the whole process again. And again, around the corner comes the bus and letters are shoved back into my arms.

Not to be defeated, I made my way across the street and peered in the winows of the Twin Peaks Bar. Definately enough people. I decided that I had no other choice than to head inside. Accruing enough people was a process. Some thought I was funny, others thought I was nuts. After some quite animated converstation, I had enough people. Although i will admit that my favorite participant was a kind gentleman in BeefEater Garb. Maybe he works at The Saint Francis Drake, maybe he's just having a good time. But either way, I was thrilled that he agreed to be my "W," seeing that mine had been stolen in a prior bus stop crime. After lining up my recruits, the bar tender was kind enough to snap some shots from behind the bar. Overall, quite an experience.

Thanks for your help guys! You helped me make a memorable thursday.
