Player Photograph by the band-aid bandit
September 21st, 2008 12:00 AM / Location: 37.758832,-122.4097I was so motivated to learn more about this intriguing phrase that I went to the library today here in San Francisco and borrowed their last copy of "On Gramatology" the book in which the phrase "sous rature" appears. Cool thing about this book is a lot of the concept words are in French while the rest of the words are in English. Interesting that the translator kept the concept words in French.
Apparently, Derrida is all about the origin just being totally lost, not destroyed, just unfound or found but then lost again. Perhaps that's why the sf0.org peps wrote for the task that "you may be your character, but your character need not be you." "Under Erasure" is a concept I think that is very prevalent today with all the copies and reproductions that make up our everyday lives. Still there is high prices placed on products that are the "original" brand or made by a certain designer.
2. My photo of me "under erasure" has a quote I found about Derrida's idea of under erasure and a photo of me copied with the outside of me bigger than the inside of the photo of me. The outside is defined by the inside and vice a versa, the inside defined by the outside so there's no real beginning or end. Telos is a myth.
k top that for procrastination.
The Photo of me(s) is another example of the use of digital technology to make copies and in doing so I erase a little piece of myself and compressing the image down into a small file takes away resolution, on top of that you got filters that just erases even more of what was originally there. This file as well speak could lose more pixels if downloaded but then truncated etc... under erasure... GOD, why I can't I just disappear...
3. oh yeah so I deleted my first player photograph since I think I can do better and I would love to revisit Derrida. So to be updated. hehe
4. Me in a blue hat. Looks like I'm having fun right. Well I end up losing that blue hat and leaving early. I don't dress up or have fun in general. Specifically I do like to have crazy experiences that leave staying up past midnight but in General I fear everything and everyone. This image erases the real me and replaces it with an idea. The web is made up of this kind of information that obscures or erases the real. Like a mask, this image does not move, gesture or change even though the person behind the mask has moved on.
5. He he, hey Eddy I thought your Villian Card was so good that I made myself one. I hope to get to laminate and "make it real" soon so I can show people. Maybe get into some cool event where villanny is to be had. Though I have to say most of the time I think I am the Victim so it's about time I step up to the Villlain role and pull up my purple pants with gold belt.

I'd always wondered what "sous rature" was but got lazy about it. Thanks for all your research!
...to see an interesting text along with the photos for this task. You went above and beyond for this one in my opinion, I like it. :)

Can't say I'm used to the old French anymore. My trusty larousse, though, tells me this:
une rature = an alteration
raturer = to alter
And I take it this isn't in the fashion sense.
In castilian spanish it comes through as borradura or tachadura, which is an implication of the red lines you'd make on someone's rough draft.
I gather that's something of the concept that is used to explain the philosophical term.
your "No Vision" typographic design is awesome
Are you still interested in adding on to your tattoo? I'm a tattoo enthusiast of sorts (check out my tatts in my tasks and profile pictures) and I'm starting a little project I like to call "tattoo counseling." Now, I don't counsel regretful people with ugly existing tattoos (who want cover ups) but I help those who are looking to come up with ideas that represent a deeper, personal significance. I won't design the tattoo but I can help you come up with a clearer picture (idea) of what you'd like.
way to go the distance!
