Dérive by Dr. Subtle

January 8th, 2008 1:25 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Among the various situationist methods is the dérive [literally: 'drifting'], a technique of transient passage through varied ambiances. In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

One can dérive alone, but all indications are that the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several small groups of two or three people who have reached the same awakening of consciousness, since the cross-checking of these different groups' impressions makes it possible to arrive at objective conclusions.

Undertake a dérive, and report your objective conclusions to your fellow players.

I drifted from when I woke up around noon to around 4PM. I started by taking the first bus I saw, a 59U, downtown. I got off at Market Square and just started wandering.

I first was drawn by the different construction sites downtown. I saw an Army-Navy Surplus store and bought a new bandanna. I wandered down a dark alley and ended up between the convention center and the river.

Under the convention center I wandered down to the river, and then back up to Penn Ave.

I walked up Penn, stopping at a bar with a sign for Chicken Bacon Panini. I had one, and a Rum and Pineapple. Further up Penn, I browsed a book store, a grocery store, and the Leaf and Bean, a combo cigar shop and coffee house.

Finally, my feet got sore from my new shoes, so I headed over to Liberty to catch a bus back to Oakland and Squirrel Hill.

On the bus back, at a red light, the driver grabbed a loose soda can, got off the bus, and headed towards a trash can to throw it out.

The passenger behind me said pretty loudly to me "Now's our chance! Go! GO!" We didn't, but we did have a good talk after about what we would have done if we had, and the cops had caught us.

"What the hell were you doing with that bus?"

"Sorry officer! I must have gone mad with power!"

When I was listening to my iPod for parts of the drift, this is what was on it:

I Like the Way Jenny Scrubs - DJ Earworm
Stairway to Bootleg Heaven - DJ Earworm
Do You Realize?? - The Flaming Lips
Dona Dona - G String Quartet (now known as Wine in the Morning)
Through The Roof 'n' Underground - Gogol Bordello
Start Wearing Purple - Gogol Bordello
Gypsy Part of Town- Gogol Bordello
So Long, Marianne - John Cale & Suzanne Vega
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen
My Back Pages - Marshall Crenshaw
Everybody's Talkin' - Patty Larkin
You Still Touch Me - Sting
The Soul Cages - Sting
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Summer in the City - Three Dog NIght
Little Drop Of Poison - Tom Waits
Is Everybody In - William S. Burroughs Covering The Doors
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Waltzing Matilda- Tom Waits

It was an amazing little drift. I had never previously wandered the strange space between Downtown and the Strip District. I think I understand a little better how Pittsburgh flows together after making that little trip down Penn. I found a lot of street art, saw a lot of people, and generally enjoyed wandering around on a strangely warm winter day dressed like a badass.

Grabbing the wheel of the bus would have been the furthest and most hard core drift possible and if you'd gotten out of jail, you would have been able to post the best proof in ages. Let this be a lesson: Your Character Never Misses A Connection It Will Get You Score.

Okay okay. As it is, you did a good job "dériving" into conversation. Well played. Some really good pictures, too!
