Object Annotation by Heatherlynn

February 20th, 2008 11:07 AM / Location: 34.008237,-118.4978

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

So there's a pier close to Los Angeles, actually in the city of Santa Monica. It's a fabulous place with lots of restaurants, rides, arcades, gift shops, food carts, and other suitably date-like or touristy stuff.

It's a place that I love. But I only love it for one reason. It was where my husband and I went on our first date. We actually had dinner at Polly's House of Pies in Santa Monica, which is not on the pier. But we went to the pier right after. We could only afford one ride, and we chose the ferris wheel.

This ferris wheel, known as The Pacific Wheel, is the world's largest solar-powered ferris wheel. It's 85 feet high and is located near the end of the pier, so when you're at the top, you feel almost like you're on the ocean.

Because this object is very important to me, I wrote two things. First off, I wrote an ode. It's a little less personal, but embodies how I feel about the ferris wheel, and what the ride on it symbolizes to me.

The second thing that I wrote is a letter. It's to the ferris wheel itself, and let's the ferris wheel know exactly how I feel and why.

After several weekends of rain, business, conferences, and other life necessities, my husband and I headed off to the pier.

We arrived at the pier at about 10:30 in the morning.

It was really crowded.

Knowing that the park staff would not allow me to hang the paper if they caught me, I prepared ahead of time.

Then we headed in.

I hung them quickly on the pole next to the entrance to the line.

They were right next to the wheel and to the people running the ride.

They were blowing pretty hard, so C.M. added some more tape.

People did read them.

We walked away to be a little less conspicuous.

When I came back about 20 minutes later, they had been removed.  At least some people were able to see how I feel about the wheel, and hopefully it brought some happiness to others.

Ain't no "almost" about it. You really feel like you're on the water when you're at the top of that thing.

Not pictured: The fella that slipped some ride tickets under the tape.

I very much like both your poem and letter. I'm sure all the people who were able to read them before they were taken down enjoyed their moments at the pier more, too.

Who the hell takes down such a lovely letter? I like to think someone wanted to show it to someone else who wasn´t there. Otherwise, is only plain squaredom or jealousy on not bieng able of feeling+writing+posting something like it.
Ah, and I am not sure which one takes more guts: to share something so precious with strangers at the pier or online with a bunch of us players.

"skookum tumtum tasking"

Hey, neat, I learned a new word!

Thank you, Susy

I have to admit, when I posted it, I was scared out of my mind. Having people read that. Possibly getting in trouble for posting it at all. All those things were making my heart beat fast and my breathing be irregular.

But then I got to go film Lincoln and Don Limon doing another amazing task, so it took my mind off of it.

:)

The Walrus and I did a task here a while back, and have been begging for the photos we took on someone else's camera to post them. Beautiful, and the sea really does seem to catch fire during a sunset from up there.

I'll let you know when we finally post it.
