Super Vote by Charlie Fish

October 14th, 2007 4:04 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Reward a player with a personalized super vote by delivering them a real world gift in the mode of your group's trajectory of desire that expresses your appreciation and astonishment at one of their SF0 task completions.

Perhaps use the post, or if you prefer, the tristero.

Transatlantic Super Vote!

Ever since I joined SF0 a couple of months ago, The Villain has caught my attention. Very few people have embraced the concept of "you may be your character, but your character need not be you" so successfully. He is our cyberspace highwayman. And a dashing figure he cuts, too.

I think I speak on behalf of many of us when I say that his creativity and ingenuity reached new heights with his answer to "What is Advertising?" - He has had dozens of players waiting with baited breath and obsessively checking his praxis. And he has made our day, time and again. He has had us all in the palm of his villainous hand.

I wanted to make him a Super Vote to say thank you. Not just for his drawing of me, which I love, but on behalf of everyone who has raised a smile at his glorious tasking.

Problem: How to make the Super Vote appropriately thoughtful and symbolic? After all, each of his drawings of us has been painstakingly researched and personalised. The Super Vote needed to reflect that. So I hopped onto the Internet to see what I could find out about our favourite mustachioed foe, A.K.A. Dax Tran-Caffee.

Wow. The man's an inspiration. He's not just an artist, he's a musician, a model, a pirate radio personality, a puppeteer...

This last vocation gave me an idea. My Super Vote would pay tribute to The Villain with a nod to the film Being John Malkovich. Why? Because...

a) It's a great, creative and ingenious film.

b) It stars a puppeteer, and carries a theme of puppetry. (Dax is currently doing an internship with Blair Thomas Puppet Co.)

c) Above all, it encapsulates the thrill of becoming a character to help pursue your trajectory of desire.

So, to work! First, I scanned my old video sleeve of Being John Malkovich. (You can see much less grainy full-resolution versions of these pictures at the bottom of this proof.)

Then - in the true spirit of EquivalenZ - I spent (way) too long Photoshopping it until it represented a fitting homage to The Villain's work.

Next, I wrote him a message and found him an appropriate gift. I chose a telephone box pencil sharpener - which has the dual benefits of representing London (this is, after all, a transatlantic Super Vote) and also having a practical use, especially for an artist that occasionally works with coloured pencils.

I put the sleeve into an empty video box...

...and placed the message and the gift into the box along with a few decorations. (You can just about see that I printed the original Being John Malkovich cover onto the back of the label.)

Finally, I packaged it all up and wandered down to the post office.

Thank you, Mr. Villain!

Enjoy your Super Vote!

This is what the video cover looked like before I attacked it with Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

This is what it looked liked afterwards. The blurb on the back says: "The Villain hereby receives this Super Vote from Charlie Fish for his outstanding contribution to tasking. Special mention must go to his astounding drawings of various SF0 members. We are honoured and delighted that he has shared his considerable talent so widely."

Here's the Super Vote box in all its glory. I lost count at some point, but there's at least 83 Villains there.

Here's the inside of the Super Vote box, containing the message, the gift, some fish (because I am Charlie Fish), some Fair Trade chocolate (I believe you Yanks call it Transfair), a Joker and a fluffy chick why not.

Here's me getting ready to post the Super Vote.

The Villain sent me a message today to say that he had received his Super Vote. And as he pointed out:

... what is more incredible is that the Villains have in fact taken over.

You have unwittingly completed Document Future as well as Player Manipulation. Claim your points.

But that's not my style. I'm not villainous enough. Votes instead, please!

:)

That cover with all the Villains is a little scary. Nice job!

You will destroy me with kindness.

How can a Villain continue his profession while his eyes are clouded with tears.

Damn. Damn you.

for the Fish, not the Villain

This vote is for your inspired task completion, not for the dreaded subject of your admiration. I think this clearly demonstrates the fact that Mr. Villain, contrary to his purported evil ways, has inspired nothing but positive endeavors. He is but a harbinger of goodness, as evidenced by the Revolution now under way. Mr. Fish, I am sure your confusion will be remedied as you join the rest of the un-villainous horde. Viva la Revolution!

Wait. What? Really?

You're telling us that you designed that box *before* the massive Villainification occurred?

Where you working behind the scenes to spread villiany, or was the whole thing an astounding coincidence? In a universe this big, uncanny things shouldn't be all that surprising. . .but, still, that would be rather strange.

Yes, I designed that box at least two weeks before the Villainification was even a twinkle in MetaMink's cunning eye.

But I don't think it's entirely coincidence. A character as compelling as the Villain's was bound to attract all kinds of attention eventually.

Good work, Fish.

Jesus H. Christ! Where was I the morning of October 13th? More importantly, how did this slip through the cracks of an RSS feed, email updates, and correspondence of players??

Well done, Fish. I enjoy that these super-votes really express some perhaps-unsaid-and-felt-by-many sentiments about inspiration on this game. This is proving to be one of the classiest tasks around, with excellent completions, and it seems yours is still on top....
