Avant-Caricature by Charlie Fish

INSTRUCTIONS: Modern, conceptual art has found a home in the scholarly walls of museums - but will it do the same on a street corner? In the hands of the everyman, will modern non-objectivism be appreciated?

Your task is to find out - set up an easel, a chair, and a paper pad and offer your services as a modern caricature artist. Think Rothko, think Mondrian. (If a bright eyed child sits in front of you, draw a yellow circle, for example.)

Make sure you document (photograph) your adventure, record your customer's reactions, and show us the art you made.

If people actually decide to pay you for your "art" - give their money back (still give them the drawing) , and explain sf0 to them.

A day off work, and I planned to do some tasking. I bought myself some acrylic paint and a pad of heavy paper, I borrowed some paintbrushes from a friend, and I made a sign advertising my wares.

Then I sat in a pub, got very drunk, and painted non-representational caricatures for whoever wanted one.

I got five customers, who I painted in the style of Kandinsky, Miro, Pollock, Rothko and Barnett Newman respectively. The Pollock was the most fun to paint, but I think the Newman was the most aesthetically pleasing.

University of Aesthematics is always way over-represented on the praxis. There have been twice as many UofA completions than any other group. But I've completed nearly 60 tasks in two years, and I have NEVER done a UofA task... until now.

Medium

I mostly used four colours of acrylic paint. And, yes, that's a slice of lemon in my rinse pot.

Norris

Norris

My first client! She stayed remarkably still while modelling for me. So I felt guilty when I was barely looking at her.

Kandinsky

Kandinsky

Norris asked for a Kandinsky-style caricature. It took at least twice as long as advertised...

Spillage

Spillage

I was a bit drunk (very drunk, by the end of the day...), and I spilled my rinse pot over the painting. I managed to rescue it, but a couple of the crisp edges were not so crisp anymore. All part of the look, of course.

Pleased

Pleased

Norris acted very pleased with her painting. She's an artist herself.

You may think she's holding it upside-down, but actually I painted it upside-down.

Waitress

Waitress

The waitress wanted a Miro-style caricature. She was busy, so she asked me to do it from a picture. This is the picture.

I am a artist.

I am a artist.

I am not a artist.

I could be Miro.

I could be Miro.

This is the finished caricature of the waitress. I know the likeness is uncanny, but it's not actually the waitress herself, it's only a painting!

I was surprised that my clients went to such lengths to sound intellectual. I was was even more surprised that they seemed to actually want to keep their paintings.

Andrew

Andrew

My third customer, Andrew, wanted a Pollock.

If I'd been much drunker, I could have vommed on the page. Voila, Pollock!

South African Andrew was very jolly.

Concentrating

Concentrating

This is a serious art.

Splattering

Splattering

I enjoyed painting the Pollock more than any of the others.

Finished Pollock

Finished Pollock

Andrew seemed genuinely pleased with the result.

My friends were getting annoyed with me at this point because the waitress refused to serve us food until I cleared away all the paint stuff. Even after I cleared it away, we ended up waiting for an hour and a half for our food - perhaps we had pissed them off somehow.

An original Fish

An original Fish

Andrew actually asked me to sign his caricature.

Canadian Liam

Canadian Liam

Customer number four!

Rothko

Rothko

Liam wanted a Rothko-style caricature. This is the finished product.

Spitting image

Spitting image

I don't think Rothko would have used such bright colours. But hey, Liam was a bright sort of chap.

Alison

Alison

Alison was shy. She deleted the pictures I took of her because she didn't like them, and she said I could use this one.

Hard at work

Hard at work

I suggested a Barnett Newman-style caricature for Alison.

She went home before it was finished (the red layer was still drying), so I kept the finished product as my own souvenir of the evening.

This is very win.
I have all of the tools and desire to do this, and you beat me to it. Good going.
I think I'll still do it even though I don't think I can out-awesome you.

UPDATE: I've changed the format of the waitress video so it's easier to view. She was very cool!

It's great that you found so many people who were into the idea. Also, you had a super sign. Signage is very important for establishing credibility!

The Rothko really looks a bit like him. It's nice to look at it that way.

Cool, you actually did this in the end :)
The one of Liam is just like him!

"It goes this way up, clearly."

Maybe it's just me, but...

Liam doesn't seem too happy to be portrayed as a square.
