Art, at your disposal by Charlie Fish

October 11th, 2007 4:20 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a piece of artwork entirely from items that are typically used once and discarded. Test your skill: leave it unattended and see if it ends up in the bin.

OR

Produce an art object that is meant to be enjoyed once and then disposed of.

For this task I drank a lot of beer, then used the cans to make lanterns.

I made the lanterns by cutting strips out of the cans with the ringpulls (see the instructional video below), and then I put tealights inside them - so I didn't use any tools or other items that aren't typically used once and discarded.

The lanterns themselves were also designed to be enjoyed once and then disposed of, so both parts of the task description were fulfilled.

As for leaving them unattended, I went to my beloved local cinema and left them (lit, of course) on some of the tables in the café. (Maybe I should submit this under Lux Aeterna as well! Nah, that'd be cheating I'm sure...) Then I went in to watch a film.

Sadly, when I came out again the lanterns had been cleared away. Mind you, the café was closing by then, so they might have lasted while people were still sitting around... I'll never know!

The five lanterns I made, in all their artful glory.

They look much crapper under the harsh light of the flash.

This shows how I made them without any tools - just using the ringpull to curl strips out. And I only cut my fingers once. (Dammit.)

I left the lit lanterns on five tables in the Ritzy café... (Again, the lanterns don't look very good under the harsh light of the flash.)

...and then I went to see The Brave One. It's pretty good.

Sadly, when I came out, the lanterns had been cleared away... :(

An excellent completion, and extra cool bonus points both for using trash as tools and for displaying them in public.

How'd you convince the cafe staff to let you set them up and photograph them?

And now...

I silently perform a dance of joy at this awesome completion.

Wonderful!

Thanks for your kind comments, all!

Loki - I didn't ask, I just did it. They're an arty lot anyway. It's that kind of cinema.

Very cool. Made me curious, though...how did you find out you could rip through cans with only the tab pulls?

Rongo Rongo: I don't know. It's one of those things I've known as long as I can remember, like how to pop McDonald's straws, or how to make someone feel like they're going through the floor. I don't know who showed me originally.

How is the floor thing done?

I found a reference to the floor trick here. I don't recommend lifting your friend's arms to waist height, though, you might injure them! As high as is comfortable.

It's remarkably effective!

If I can think of a good task-excuse I'll make a video to show you.
