Suggestions Box by Borgasm

October 14th, 2009 11:40 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take a large box and label it 'Suggestions'.

Decorate it if you want.

Take it with you and get suggestions from strangers.

The suggestions can be about anything.

I love this task. :D Words without pictures are useless to explain what happened, though, so here's a brief summary of each day and then a picture-book story :D

Day 1-
I had the box at work all morning and afternoon, left it by the main entrance to my dorm and took it to the cafeteria and history class. I collected a total of four suggestions. Many people wanted to look at my box and many others seemed interested in suggesting something if they were told what to suggest. But I always stuck to my story that I was doing a project, not related to any class, and wanted to see what kind of things people would suggest. I got one suggestion at work (I left it there when I had lunch! It was there for SIX hours!!), one at dinner and two in class. My absolute favourite suggestion came from a pretty girl who was sitting next to me in History:
"Might I suggest eliminating all corduroy/annoying sounding fabric from the world? I'm tired of hearing people when they walk... ooh! take out windpants too! While I'm at it, I suggest that everyone be allowed to be naked in public @ least one day a week with no ridicule from anyone. Thanks!"

I majorly heart this girl.

Day 2-
I left the box in the computer lab ALL day and only got one measly suggestion, and it was a long rant about the payment policy at our campus. Then I took it to Japanese Literature and got four more suggestions, two from the same person. The best one:
"Climb Trees. Go up the down escalator. Stare at the clouds. Don't pay attention to what everyone thinks."

I also made a note on this day that I put next to my box to explain it to people so I didn't have to. :P

Day 3-
This day, I decided to take my chances and leave the box in the dorm entrance all day. I got six suggestions. My favourite is a tie between "I suggest that people stop looking at everything so objectively. We're all humans, after all. It's relative." and "Orgy."

Day 4-
Today I got up pretty late and didn't go many places. I decided to take my box to only one place with me: the weekly meeting for the Gay Straight Alliance. And today was my lucky day, because we had more people at this meeting than ever! We had a lot of fun and six people made suggestions. I mentioned the suggestion from Day One to a girl there and she disagreed, saying she shouldn't be subjected to naked people if she does not want to. This was a fair point. I liked bringing my box to this group especially because after my initial "the suggestions can be about anything", no further questions were asked. It was rad. Most entertaining suggestion:
"I suggest you burst into song the next time you check out at the grocery store. :P"

**between days 4 and 5, I brought the box with me to the costume shop to help build costumes, and it sparked a fifteen minute conversation about what we would do to improve the world. Mostly it was a conversation about forming a hypothetical "contract" that a person would have to sign before beginning a romantic relationship with us. It was quite a nifty conversation.

Day 5-
For my fifth and final day, I decided to take the box to my Costume Design and Construction class and make big loud announcements that I was TAKING SUGGESTIONS, PEOPLE. And what do you know? I got ten suggestions! And some good ones, too:
"Soak gummy bears in vodka."

"That every time you have sex you have an orgasm."

"Remember to have enough fiber in your diet! (Not specific to anyone, just general good advice."

I highly suggest you click on the pictures of my suggestions from Day 5 and read them all. Them actors are some good thinkers. :P

And thus concludes the adventures of Suggestion Bot. The corners of the box were getting worn, I was getting tired of carrying it around, and my pile of suggestions was starting to tip over. And what did I learn? I have made a chart according to how many people were nice and/or curious enough to contribute to my box:

Theater majors --> Freshman --> Japanese professors --> My friends --> Japanese students --> Pissed off students in the school of management computer lab --> mild-mannered students in the school of management computer lab.

And hey, some of these suggestions are going to be fun to act on! I will be increasing my tea intake and eating more sushi and fibrous foods, for one. Streaking is probably not gonna work, and there isn't enough wind to fly a kite properly in my town (although one friend has kindly offered to give me a ride on the back of his motorcycle so I can get a kite in the air). Singing in the grocery store sounds awesome, why haven't I thought of it before? I can't overthrow the government, but going up on the down escalator sounds like fun (and is a damn good exercise, if my memory is correct). And when ISN'T orgy a good idea?
;)

Nice completion... The Kanji 空 is also read as から meaning empty... empty in a drawn circle seems to remind me of a Koan...

Hmmm...
