Player Photograph by Jonny

September 21st, 2008 12:00 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: The first task reads: "Take a picture of yourself. " This is the only time a sous rature gesture will be made, so let us remind you: you may be your character, but your character need not be you.

I was going to go out and get really pissed and take a photo of me with SF0 written on my forehead :)
This would of greatly amused my firends :)
I coulnt be bothered waiting to do this... so here is me as a Simpson :)

Flagged due to:

Internet images: for the most part, a completion should be more than a collection of images you found on the internet. Almost every task is looking for more creativity and action in your task completions.

It's not difficult to use one of the many "make me a Simpsons character" websites, and certainly not deserving of points...

"for the most part"

Player photos are pretty much exempt from most of the rules.

"you may be your character, but your character need not be you."

True, but as the wiki itself says:
"These are not the rules"

I see your point though...

"These are not the rules" in context refers to the wiki itself not being the rules. Out of context, it means little. Actually, quoting it here as you appear to have done makes it sound like that statement constitutes a rule for not reading the task descriptions as rules (or in the case of the player's proof on which you're commenting, not). In any case, it certainly doesn't do that! The defense Tom raises is interesting but it could be argued player photos are not really exempt from the rules, instead perhaps what we see is an over enthusiastic misapplication of "the rules." In which case "you may be your character but your character need not be you" at minimum supersedes the flagging guidelines within the wiki, as the wiki is the result of societal processes and whereas the task itself is The First Task; the path to praxis filling the role of a more fundamental game structure than the interspersed layers of interpretation present in the wiki. You see?

No.

What?

Yeah, the quote in the previous comment was meant to show an agreement with Tom (in that I found that what I initially flagged for was, in fact, merely a commonly accepted suggestion rather than a rule). The actual words I used around the quote changed the entire meaning of it, and for that I apologise.

That being said, I believe that Player Photographs should not be considered exempt from the rules. Despite being "The First Task", it is still worth points. As such, I feel that if a player has the right to claim points for posting a Player Photograph, then viewers should have the right to express their opinion if they feel that the completion isn't worth the points, like any other task.

It isn't that they are exempt from any rules. What it is, is, that the directions pretty clearly state that just about anything goes. The "sous rature" gesture idea means that the picture need not be a fully adequate tag for the player (or the character) but is necessary as a way of tagging the player (or character).

Which, to me, means that just about anything goes. This includes pix from the internet, doodles on your fridge, or even George Washington from the dollar bill in your back pocket. I actually believe that the flag button ought to be de-activated on the player pic page. Folks should be allowed to designate and display themselves, portray themselves (or their character(s)) however they wish. You can comment and vote, or not, but you ought not be able to flag.

To defend the guy and the player photo task I will say that when I signed up and posted my first player photo, I was not aware it was a task worth points. It was just the first thing I had to do to get playing. So I pointed a camera at my feet and the rest is history.

And odds are good that Jonny will post that picture of SFØ written on his forehead at some point, and this all becomes moot. Plus this task is fairly mutable as I've had The Walrus as my player photo among other things like Rubin and The Villain at certain points in time. And those weren't photos I took of myself. I mean, CM has been some foodstuff or other this entire era. I think we can withhold criticism on player photos. I can't imagine there is anything somebody could post as a player photo that is worthy of a flag (and I have a pretty good imagination).

I feel that the player photograph is an organic and ever growing task. It can and does change as the character and even the self evolves. I will therefore vote for player photographs when I am inspired by the image, or feel like the character had evolved. Panties are always appreciated it seems as a rule.

Yes, but it is usually more voteworthy if someone is IN them.

nuh uh, empty panties are appreciated too. perhaps the caveat there is as long as their former occupant is nearby

Empty knickers have more potential and mystique. But I'll see what I can do.
In case you gentlemen wanted to get crafty and make your own lacy undies, I found this website for men.

Barring the player photograph being something personally insulting to another person, flagging a Player Photograph is Not Cool - especially a new player's. I didn't see the pic posted, and maybe I'm missing an in-joke, but I can't even begin to understand why someone would flag this. I'm all for high standards, but this task has always been a freebie. The administrative fake-user of the site is Derrida!
