Leave Clues by Julian Muffinbot, meredithian

March 16th, 2008 10:38 PM / Location: 41.903522,-87.66714

INSTRUCTIONS: Leave clues.

For Meredithian and Julian Muffinbot's first SF0 task, we left clues. We decided to leave a complete treasure hunt.

We went to a local Mexican restaurant to hatch our plot. There are 3 of this restaurant on the same block. The photos show all 3 locations but sadly do not pose an answer to the question of why there are 3. Though, we do have a photo of the question itself.

The first clue would be found by whoever picked up Clue #1 from its very obvious spot, taped to the exit turnstile of the nearest subway station. We wanted to be sure someone would do the treasure hunt, so clue #1 had to be easy to find. The rest of the clues were hidden in various spots, all within a block of the subway station. It's cold in Chicago and we didn't want our clue hunter to be too frustrated by the cold/distances to finish the hunt, so we made sure they did not have to go very far.

Clue #2: taped to the inside of a free newspaper box
Clue #3: behind a box of Beef Ramen in a 24 hour convenience store
Clue #4: on the roof of a bus stop shelter.
This was the only clue we placed while someone was watching. A tall, thin girl was waiting for the bus and we did not feel like waiting around in the cold until her bus came, so we simply told her we were preparing a treasure hunt and asked if, if she had not seen us putting the clue up, she would think to look up and see it taped to the roof, and she said that she would not. People don't spend enough time looking up.
Clue #5: Drawn on a sign post
Clue #6: Under a table at the Mexican restaurant
Clue #7: On top of the farecard machine in the same subway station in which the hunt started

There is no treasure at the end of the hunt. The last clue simply asks the hunter to call Julian Muffinbot, and identify themselves as calling from a company called "Gila Muffins" to receive a secret message, and then to destroy the clues.

The hunter will then speak to Julian, who will ask them if they enjoyed their clue hunt experience and thank them for completing the hunt. If the hunter is interested in having more fun of this type, they will be directed back to sf0 to join up (we always need more Chicagoans!).

Really, you guys rock. I would be absolutely thrilled to find mysterious clues to a random surprise treasure hunt. I hope someone follows them - update and let us know if you get a call!

of course, if i get a call, i will update in great detail! i kinda want to go buy a cheap recording device to keep on me at all times just in case this happens.

I liked the location of the first clue. I want to do this task as well, but I can't seem to think of a way to stop people picking up the [n+1]th clue and completing the 'treasure hunt' without seeing the ones they missed. Any ideas?

well, they might pick up a later clue, but the later ones were much better hidden: taped to the undersides of things, or in a spot no one ever looks. so, while it is a possibility, i think it is unlikely.

Awesomely done! You might want to have some sort prize for someone who calls you, to be left in a suitably mysterious drop location. It wouldn't due for people to get disappointed/frustrated with SF0.

Nice! I especially like the use of the turnstile. In plain view, but not obvious.

Well Done. I wish it had been me who found the clue. I rarely get off at Division and Milwaukee.

i really wish someone had found our clues and followed them. i was thinking of this today. if any of them were still there, i would be temped to specifically tell someone where to find the first one and have them follow them in the hopes of inviting them to the game.

or mabe in retrospect, i wish we had thought to leave clues for each other, or for someone that we actually know. we've seen this done in more recent completions, and it's fun that doing it this way allows for someone to complete the "a clue" task.

i guess i was just wondering today if anyone ever had any sort of adventure with our clues, and wishing there were some way of knowing. it was so fun at the time to leave clues for some total stranger but now i find myself wanting some closure or payoff.

yeah. it might have been more fun to leave clues for others. i will check our last clue. it was definitely up for a few weeks at least following when we did this task, but i will check again!

It is so sad when clues go undiscovered. Is the last one still there?

i have no idea. the next time i am going to visit the gang in that area i'm determined to take the train instead of the more direct bus route and check.

Cool!

I am SO going to do this task! I live in a relatively small town, so I might post all the clues around the town center.
