Object Annotation by Kiyash M, Jane McGonigal, robin sloan, Love Mercenary

November 3rd, 2007 6:37 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

Our team of four collaborated with another team of two (lead by SF0er Kris Tian) on this mission.

To set the mood, we annotated ourselves first -- with a do-it-yourself labeling machine. Photographs of our self-labels below. We wore these labels our entire mission, and met many, many people on the street as a result. Everyone was curious about why we were labeled and what our labels meant!

Once we were fully self-annotated, we hit the Castro neighborhood, where we chose three objects to annotate. We spent approximately one hour on the street on this mission, 9 to 10 PM on a Friday night.

We used index cards, sharpies, and plain scotch tape. We each write one love letter, and then we all take turns reading each others' after they have been posted. We made 18 annotations in total, I've chosen a few to post here -- the rest live on only on the street and in the memory of those who saw them that night!

The first object we annotated was the Castro rainbow flag. See photos below. I tried to capture the text in the dark, but it was difficult -- you will have to squint to make out the words of love!

Next we annotated a "LOOK" sign on the pavement. This was more difficult than our first mission, as cars kept zooming by as we attemtped to place our notes on the ground. It was hard to actually obey the sign while loving it. Nevertheless, we succeeded -- and our six postcards of love are also shown below.

Finally, we annotated the Castro film theater. This object required a more stealth approach, as Castro employees were on the premises, and we weren't sure how they would feel about our expressions of love. Instead of mobbing the object, as we did the first two, we went one at a time. Our six postcards of love are shown below!

Completing this mission made us very happy, and I know I will always feel a personal connection to those objects -- particularly that LOOK sign -- whenever I'm in the neighborhood!
