Work is So Strange by George McArthur

One of the ESL classes I teach is "Foundations," which is the beginning level. Because students at that level have virtually no fluency, one of the most effective teaching methods is to show them objects or flash cards to build vocabulary. Before the first morning class, I noticed three Canadian Geese milling around outside the door. I thought it would be a great lesson to write "goose," pronounce the word and then open the door so the students could see the real thing. Every thing went smoothly until I opened the door when one waddled in. To make matters worse, it was a little aggressive and it took several lunges with my book cart to get the trespassing fowl to leave. On the upside, not one of those students will ever forget the definition of goose.

Love this story!
