Death Kava by Fiona

February 3rd, 2009 8:56 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Eat a food that frightens you.

Hmmm, another task.
I am stranded at the moment as I have no money to buy diesel to move my house until my check clears on Wednesday or Thursday. I am stranded on the south coast, near my office, so I have access to my computer and a camera I can borrow off my Grandfather. I have very little work to do (okay, I have some I should be doing, but very little I have to do). This leaves me plenty of time.
I was looking through for tasks I could do properly in these circumstances, I don't like to scrimp or cheat so I didn't want to force one or do anything too easy. I was glancing at Death Kava and thinking about how I'm really not a fussy eater so it would be really hard to find a food that actually frightened me. I think I would be frightened of eating brains, apart from shrimp brains 'cos I suck them out all the time, yum, but I don't know where I would find any which were suitable for eating. So I thpught it was a no go.
Then I remembered. Over a year ago, my friend Sim came back from China with some little sealed foil packages of duck tongues and chicken feet and gave them to me. They have been sat in the bottom of a drawer in my office ever since. I think if I went to one of those chinese food marts where they had the bits of animals hanging up, they probably wouldn't scare me, but these are cold and in foil and I bet they are going to look really gross and jellified when I unwrap them.
At the time of writing this intro, I am still not sure if I am going to do it, especially as I have looked at the use-by-date and it was eight months ago. Now I know the use-by date on some products is more of a formality to keep the stock turning over, but how about feet and tongues? These were sealed and designed to last for many months, so if no bacteria could get in then, why would it be able to now? I don't know how it works. Maybe I'll get bird flu and die! Well. Probably not. I usually have the stomach of an alley cat, you build up quite a good immune system with my wandering lifestyle.
Okay. I'll go get the camera (sighs in a resigned manner).

Got the camera and some chocolate cookies to wash them down with but feel the need to go off and play a few games of table tennis with my Grandad while I think about it.

Okay, he's not ready for table tennis yet, so I'll just have to go ahead and do it.

I have decided that as the task only says 'a' food that frightens you, I am only obliged to eat one of these. I will go for the duck tongues as for some reason I believe they are less likely to make me ill.

They were disgorged from the packet smelling very much like cat food. What exactly is the wiggly bit sticking out the back?

Don't I look pretty!

main_yuck01274797.jpg

Not enjoying this very much.

This tongue has a bone in it.

Really cold and jellified but I suppose at the end of the day it does mostly taste like duck.

Just a few little indiscribable bits of ick and bone left.
Tadaahhhhh...
Then I scoffed some chocolate biscuits to get rid of the taste.
I feel sick now. Hope it's just psychological!

I got to the description of what you thought the contents of the packages might be like and decided that I'm just not going to read this right now. Nossir, not now when I'm this hungry and lunch time is still so far away.

I'm sure this is going to be good, but I'm sure it's not going to be fun.

Did you think the feet might have been better? I'm not sure. I still have them if any of the Isle of Wight lot want to give it a go.
