Polyphasic Sleep by Laura
December 10th, 2007 12:07 AMI've been sleeping way too much for several months, so I decided to give this a whirl. I awoke yesterday at 8:30ish and stayed awake until 4:15 a.m. and then slept my "core sleep" period of three hours and awoke at 7:15 a.m.
Now I'm slightly foiled in my first day due to the fact that I left my extra power cord to my laptop at a coffee shop last night, which meant I had to come into the office this morning. Power napping every few hours is much easier when working from home than when in the office.
I took my first powernap at 6:30 p.m. I woke up went out to retrieve my lost power cord. I did some painting and some housework. I'm still feeling pretty good.
11/29/07:
Oh noes! Big bowl of fail! I had one more nap and getting up, but fell asleep over my laptop sometime after 2 a.m. but well before 4. and slept until my 7:00 earlybird alarm.
11/30/07:
I kept my schedule pretty well yesterday, though due to the fail I didn't actually go to sleep for most of my naps. I got decent meditative time, though. Back when I practiced yoga every day, if I were extremely tired I used to be able to trance for about half an hour and then feel like I'd slept, though this practice would eventually catch up with me.
I went dancing last night, and I have to say I had a very very difficult time awaking after 3 hours of sleep.
12/02/07:
I kept pretty well to the schedule for two days. However, last night while at a show (at which I stayed until late at night thanks to my less-sleep regime) I developed a severe headache and had to break the schedule because my head demanded rest.
12/03/07:
My week is complete. No major breaks of schedule were forced in the last few days. The last few hours of my schedule were spent teaching several lovely people to play Gnostica and having some bizarre and esoteric bonding. My glorious presence and enthusiasm kept said individuals up and engaging in meaningful socializing when they might otherwise have merely been sleeping to gain energy for anther day.
In conclusion: It's pretty much impossible for me to keep a strict sleeping schedule. I think that's probably true of anyone who has a life or vaguely unpredictable commitments. And I don't think attempting a strict polyphasic sleep schedule is going to magically alleviate the Crisis.
This has absolutely gotten me into the mode of never sleeping when I might possibly have something more interesting to do. It has also gotten me into the ability to powernap. If I have things that I want to do but am absolutely exhausted, I believe I will continue to be able to take a half hour nap then get up and do the things I want to do. I should also be able to go with an indefinite average of 5-6 hours of sleep a day, which is a big improvement. This task has been completely enriching for me.
And now, goodnight. I have to pick up a friend from the airport in an hour and a half, and then work.
12/10/07:
I meant to post this as soon as my week was up, but I had left my camera's USB cord at the office. I just stopped by to grab it on the way back from a show (which begs to point to the fact that I was awake and at a show). I'm a bit glad that I didn't post it yet, because the mostly-another-week update is very relevent.
I have, as planned, kept up powernapping when I'm sleepy. My nightly sleep has averaged 3-5 hours. I'd say I'm sleeping 5-6 hours a day on average. And I feel indescribably good, energy-wise. My previous jokes about being an old lady aside, I had been sleeping far too much for far too long. Lately I have been up, doing things I want to do and that make me happy. I have been spending time with people at times when people are available, even when those times are widely divergent for different people. Not feeling rushed that I must get things that I "have to do" done during my few waking and non-working hours, I've been spending meaningful amoutns of time doing things that bring me joy. Maybe a little less than an additional week into it is too early to say, but right now I feel like this task has changed me life.
Sleeping

Dramatization: I wasn't really sleeping in this picture. Instead I was taking a picture of myself pretending to sleep.
The Peacock Abstraction

Things I did when I would have otherwise been sleeping include: painting my closet door. It's almost done now, and looks medium-snazzy.
Gnostica

Things I did when I would have otherwise been sleeping include: Teaching people to play Gnostica. Dramatization: I didn't have my camera handy when I was actually teaching people. So I took this later. Note of interest to Gnostica players: When I first dealt my dramatization board, every single land was a Sword, except for Death. That would be an interesting or highly annoying game.
My messy room

Things I did not do when I would have otherwise been sleeping include: Cleaning my room. Yep, big mess. Didn't feel like doing it when I was awake. Though after most of my second week of not-so-much-sleep, I actually have cleaned it.

...Vote for the Crowley cards.
help - good, because mine got lost and goddammit, I want to play Gnostica.
Tasking that impinges so much on day-to-day life surely deserves a vote from me.
Oh and I looked up Gnostica and I want to learn how to play. I've got the tarot cards if you've got the tiny plastic pyramids!
I've got the plastic pyramids, Fructosa. I'd be happy to teach you to play if you want to come to Albuquerque. :-9
So, the other day help and I played gnostica with Levitating Potato. It was awesome.
Ooh....
I have tarot. I have Icehouse pyramids (why do I have those?).
I have people I can rope into playing games (not literally... usually...)
I can has Gnostica.
Thanks!
(and the peacock abstraction is win)
I haven't done so much with polyphasic sleep (or as Guinea Pig B, aka Buckminster Fuller, called it "dymaxion sleep") because I was slightly afeared of becoming even more resemblant of Jordan from the movie Real Genius. "I couldn't sleep, so I knitted you a sweater." "I was refinishing my floors."
What do people *do* with all that extra time?
It's said, however, that my particular brand of what ails me is improved by proper, ordered, frequent rest and pacing ... so this sort of scheme is somewhat attractive.
Will try it, at least, for Team 0.
Gnostica is the best game ever. You should play it.
Funny that I just got a comment on this after a million years. Just yesterday I was thinking how I should start playing SF0 again.
Yay Gnostica!
