The Permanent Collection by Maggie

INSTRUCTIONS: Surreptitiously place a book of your creation into a public library, such that it will likely be mistaken for part of its collection.

This was a fun challenge because I got to be creative and make a book. I took this old blank journal that I had laying around from probably my wedding or something. It had a pretty cheesy cover, and I had never really used it. So I decided I would paint it, since we had plenty of paints around the house. I didn't really know what I was going to do but I decided to paint it black, figuring just covering up the other art work would be good enough. Then I just kind of messed around with the other stuff. I knew that i was just going to leave the journal blank, but for a note. So I entitled it "That which goes on" because I wanted it to be a story made up by several people who perhaps took the book and passed it on. And the never ending story was taken.

Next I wrote inside the front cover a small note about how the person who finds the book should write something in it and leave it there or pass it on. I forgot to take a picture of it before I put the book in the library. But that is the main gist.

I also had a few books rented from the library so I copied their bar code system, printed it out and just taped it on. It actually looks exactly like all the other books in that respect except on the spine I put the call number on the bottom because that is where it was on my non-fiction books, but fiction was in the middle on the spine. Oh well.

Now, this library is actually pretty small and easy to be seen in. It probably wasn't the best target for my book hiding. Not because it was hard to get the book on the shelf, but because it was hard to document it. There were only about ten people in the library, but they were so spread out it was hard to find a place to be where no one would see me taking pictures. I figured that would be a sort of give away that I was doing something not normal. So I only got one picture of it on the shelf. Seconds after putting my camera into my purse a man and his daughter walked right by.

I placed the book in the manga/ teen section mainly because that was the one place where people weren't and also because I'm sure a teen or 'young adult' would be more likely to actually think it was interesting.

Then I picked up a couple Kurt Vonnegut books, checked out and left victorious!

Nice Work! And wow, you actually made a barcode for it - I wonder if it would actually scan?

Yes! The manga section - maybe it will get drawed in! I'm a good drawler, I should go check it out! I hope that the person who gets it is smart enough to NOT try to check it out :D

Anything involving books will always get full points from me.

And the Neverending Story. I wanted to live in that movie. Son's middle name is from that movie. Love that movie so much.

And oddly I don't own a film copy of it.

Oh agreed! There are only two cases in my opinion where the movie is better than the book.

Dr. Shivago

The Far Pavilions

better movies

I'm pretty iffy on that one. I mean, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is an excellent story, and while Bladerunner is based on it I don't really consider it to be a movie version of the story. It's more of an 'inspired by'. Unlike I, Robot or I Am Legend (which was a perfectly good movie until the chick showed up).

Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, Apt Pupil and Dolores Claiborne. And maybe The Shining, Carrie, Cujo and Christine.

The idea of a participatory library book is great.
