Seeing Beyond Sight Photo Challenge by chaos shard

November 25th, 2007 11:06 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Seeing Beyond Sight has partnered with SFZero to challenge you to see the world differently - with more than your eyes.

Welcome new users: SFZero is an ongoing game in which you can choose to participate (or not) after you do the Seeing Beyond Sight Challenge.

Click here for new user registration.

1. Blindfold yourself.
(wear shades or tape your eyes shut)

2. Go out in public and make your way in the world.
(go 1 block, 1 hour or 1 roll of film; go with a friend or alone; make up your own process)

3. Photograph things you notice. And, just notice.
(What do you notice differently about objects, people, actions, interactions?)

4. Embrace the whole experience as much as the picture taking.
(Engage. Have a conversation with people you encounter. Take it all in.)

5. Share your story.
(For each photograph write a caption about your experience - a few lines or several paragraphs if you want.)

6. Challenge some friends to do it.
(email them the link: sf0.org/seeingbeyondsight)

Please don't post all the pictures from your shoot, but chose 1 to 3 that are the best images or are most telling of your experience. Caption the photos describing something about your experience - that is as important as the image itself. Longer stories are welcomed and may be added to www.seeingbeyondsight.org.

If you depend on your eyes to get around, then it is hard not to use them. Although you can tell us about how difficult it is to be blind, focus more on what you noticed about the world as you embarked on this journey.

This experience isn’t about blindness – it is about seeing, noticing and paying attention with more than your eyes.

This challenge was inspired by SEEING BEYOND SIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLIND TEENAGERS, a new book published by Chronicle Books.

I had my fiance (nicknamed Goemon) drive me around while blindfolded to some random location. I wanted to see if I could figure out where I was. Driving blindfolded is very interesting. The car doesn't feel like it's moving until it turns. The noises I noticed most were the heater, and the wind outside. Occasionally a car would pass us. They sound a lot bigger than they are. At one point, what sounded to me like a semi passing us turned out to be just a small minivan (according to our friend Lupin, who went along for the amusement.) We ended up at New York Pizza Depot. I noticed the sound of the little bells as the door opened, but that didn't stop me from walking into it. I'm not surprised, honestly. I'm clumsy even when I CAN see. I knew where we were pretty much immediately because of the scent of the garlic knots. They're very distinctive. Eating is interesting and fun when blindfolded. I recommend trying it. Just avoid any food which requires utensils. I caught myself paying a lot of attention to the taste and texture of the pizza crust. Normally I barely notice that, but here it stood out. NYPD dough is slightly sweet, which contrasts nicely with the spicy pepperoni. The human hand is also interesting to feel when you can't see it. Goemon and Lupin kept switching around to see if I could tell just by touch which of them was which. It was a little difficult, but I had one big clue. Goemon is the one with the beard. I only poked him in the nose three times. When we left, I didn't walk into the door or off the curb. (Thanks, guys). At one point, Goemon had to let go of my hand to unlock the car. Even though I knew I was perfectly safe, and that he and Lupin were right there, it was still a little freaky. I was just floating there, out of reach of everything and not daring to take a step because I could hear the traffic moving around and it sounded awful close. I was honestly relieved when Lupin helped me into the car. I didn't even mind when I bumped into the sideview mirror.

Here's where I almost blinded Goemon. I thought the flash was off, but I hit the button too many times.

I'm not sure what I was trying to take a picture of here but I think I missed. The wallpaper did have a neat texture though.

This is Lupin getting drinks. I could hear the drink machine. It had an odd hissing sound.

Here's the meal. That's Lupin's hand and chest. It's a wonder I never knocked that pizza tray over.
