Find Roof Access by transit monkey

May 11th, 2011 5:18 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Find roof access.

Along with my normal group of urban explorers- Captain Stormy, Boots, and Krusty- I headed to Pilsen to watch the sunrise from the top of an old grain elevator.

It was a long walk, and I was still slightly inebriated, but we made it there just fine, about an hour before sunrise. The stairs to the top were very rickety, and were missing several intermediate landings, but we made it to the top and wandered around for a while. There were tags everywhere, as it has been abandoned for quite some time. I was amazed at the sheer size of the storage tubes. There were about 40 of them total, some being about 150 feet high, and the rest being almost 200, and they were all about 30 feet in diameter. Stormy dropped a rock down one of them, and we calculated the height at approx 157 feet, give or take a little.

The top of the tower was great, but the roof was inaccessible. I still got some cool pictures, but I wanted to get out on the roof of the east side so I could get a good view of the Loop. After crossing the bridge and awing at the machinery the moved the massive amounts of grain around, I spotted a window that was broken out that led out onto the roof right where I wanted to be. I had a great view of the city with nothing in the way, a view that very few people have or ever will experience.

View from across the canal, it looks a lot smaller than it actually is.

Getting closer!! Those stairs look pretty scary.

The smaller group of grain storage tubes. Probably about 150 feet tall.

The tower. It kind of reminds me of the Tower of Terror ride at Disney World!

That structure just begs to be climbed but I've not managed to do it myself yet.
I think about it every time I go by though.
Awesome job getting all the way to the roof!
