My idea was to do a sort of day of the dead type look. I managed to convince my sister to show me how to paint my face as so in the "proper" way. It helped a bit that she's and artist. We looked up reference photos, (which only helped marginally) and then got down to business mixing paints etc. After a bit, my face was suitably covered in flowers and a spiderweb or two as you may see, we diverged a bit from traditional day of the dead face painting.

Then, my face covered in pounds of white powder and grease paint, we got pie. Needless to say I got a few strange looks.
