Alternative Medium Art by miss understanding

January 5th, 2008 4:31 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a Work Of Art using an Alternative, Infrequently Used Medium.

As soon as I saw this task, I knew I wanted to use organ meat. I am not sure why, but that is the first thing that came to my mind and I decided to go with it. I went to the grocery store and found out that the liver is kept right next to the pig guts. The pig stomachs gave me pause, but they were a bit too gross and didn't seem to offer the possibilities that liver did.

I wasn't really sure what was going to be made. While considering what to do with my friendly neighborhood organ meat, I came across these pages of an old Seventeen magazine (I find it important to note that I do not read Seventeen but was given the issue by a friend who knew I would like some of the photos) that I had been saving. I save random things from magazines a lot because I never know when I might find somewhere to glue them or something to make from them. The pages got my mind turning and from there it was all panties, panty-liners and glittery liver.

I ended up using three items that I would call infrequently used mediums: liver, a pair of my underwear, and some panty-liners.

Unwashed and ready to go
Supplies
The base
Coming along
Now for the finishing touch...
Raw supplies
Preparing for organ insertion
Just add liver and glitter
Gloves are always a good idea.
Tada!
Glittery guts
Your guts are showing
Feminine hygeine products, underwear and liver, Oh My!
Do your insides sparkle?

Glitter on liver! Yeah! I like how the first thing that you thought of was organ meat, and then you figured that Seventeen kind of goes with.

Okay that is so effing gross. That just looks gross. Glitter on liver stuck inside panties. That's gross! I can just see the vegans (fyi, that's about 1/3 of MNZero) gagging. (not gaggin' n' flaggin' though, right? please? you don't have to vote, but she did the task to the letter. every. disgusting. letter.) It's not even the fact of the panties and panty liners--these things aren't inherently gross; shoot, I even eat liver now and again and have enjoyed it! But the rawness of the liver grossifies everything. Now I imagine raw liver in my underwear and I get really grossed out. OH GAWD I just imagined putting my hand into a woman's panties (for the usual reasons) and instead feeling cold liver. Anyone's underpants with liver in them! Oh dear, I can never unthink that. Never! My kids play this game you twisted demon!

Regarding Vegans... they say meat is murder....
AND YOU MURDERED THIS TASK! and I mean that in a good way!
Congratulations. What's interesting is that this is not just a visual medium, but a textural (like Burn alluded to above) and olfactory (liver has a specific scent fresh, and as it becomes less so, more so. And, of course, there is the auditory addition of the flies that inevitably show up (now Burn has to imagine liver, underpants, AND flies!).

Damn nice work! Thanks! Update as it begins to rot!

I encourage those who are offended by my using animal parts in this project not to vote. I understand and respect your viewpoint. Thank you, Burn Unit, for bringing that point to my attention.

I wanted to write more in my proof about the idea behind this glittery gross piece, but my words seem to be failing me this evening. The combination of fashion ads, from a magazine that I personally see as poison, that ask if girls need this or that combined with feminine items and guts that are meant to be traded in for these "must have" items just makes sense to me. I s'pose it is my own disgust is what fueled the making of this. I wasn't even really thinking of the most basic gross out part of it. :)

JTony-thank you! Sadly, the piece was dismantled shortly after it's making. My roommates have cats....(enough said). The glitter seemed to really cover the smell, so I didn't really get to experience that part of my creation. Although while playing a corpse in a friend's movie, I did have to wear pieces of liver around my neck while they filmed so I am well acquainted with that scent.

Good point, this totally engages all five senses.

Oh the Irony....

(see, that's funny because liver is full of iron and has a slightly metallic scent, not unlike fresh arterial blood only less sharp and with a touch of lilac)

Wow. How very Divine of you.

Instead of "I've got blisters on my fingers!", I'm now hearing Ringo yell, "I've got glitter on my livers!"

Yeah, thanks JT. Thanks. I think I'll go be celibate for a while now. Like forever. I would like to change the subject.

Here we go! In other news, I just watched Sean Mahan receive a 10 yard holding penalty on a 2 point conversion attempt in the Pittsburgh-Jacksonville game. Sean, when you get back from the game tonight and you're reading this, please play more cleanly.

My impression on the piece was more around the lines of using the livers to represent the gross little secret of teenage girls: glitter and pink all around, but the curse is not pretty either.

I am disgusted and impressed.

The liver looks like it's stained the panties. (I never thought I'd write that.)

JTony-that makes me think of something I used to randomly say, "blood tastes like pennies and pennies taste good!"

Anna-thank you.

Susy-that is partially what I was going for. I didn't even think about the whole "curse" thing since I personally don't experience that. I simply thought it would be fun to use panty-liners and that it would really add something to the finished product.

Charlie-I realized as I was adding the glittery liver that I was being much too careful. When I first put it in the undies, I did a really good job at keeping them neat. I then took them out and did a much messier job the second time around.

It has been a great joy disgusting you all. (I don't know that I ever thought I would write that.)

While doing this I started to think about my own liver and the things I have subjected it to over the years. I think this task may have brought my liver and I just a little closer.

Thank you very much.

How... interesting. In a good way, especially with the commentary. :)
