Time (and medical attention) Heals All Wounds by Lainthulu
April 22nd, 2008 12:21 AMOn Friday, April 4th 2008, I did something very stupid.
I attempted to pry off the back of the watch...with a knife. And not just any knife, either. I used the sharp, clean, unserrated, brand new knife contained within the Leatherman Charge.
As I began my attempt Wednesday smartly reminded me not to cut myself. And of course, over confindent as I am, I replied with "Oh I won't" and rolled my eyes. Not more than 10 seconds later my hand slipped and I sliced a deep gash into my left thumb.
The Medical Attention
It bled for the better part of an hour. We used Wednesday's boyscout training to doctor up the cut, since I didn't have time to wait in an E.R. (I had to run a show in less than 3 hours!) We applied pressure, elevated the hand, temporarily blocked the artery until the bleeding was controlled and wrapped it up tightly with gauze...too tightly the first time in fact...my finger turned blue. So we re-wrapped it in a more circulation-friendly manner.
Needless to say, no pictures were taken during the first aid session. Unfortunately I didn't get around to taking photographs until day three. This was the first day I felt confident enough in the healing process to wear a band-aid instead of gauze.
The Time
It took 2.2857 weeks for the wound to heal completely. That's a total of 16 days or approximately 384 hours.
It healed cleanly. I was expecting a scar, but as of yet no scar has developed. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed. There is also a significant callous over the entire area which I thought was interesting. I expected it to be pinkish and tender but it seems that while the inner layers of skin healed together cleanly, the outer most layers of skin died before the healing process had finished, leaving me with a pretty significant callous.
April 10th (after a bath)

As you can see, much of the dried blood got soaked out. It does look a little nastier just cause it looks more open than previous days.
April 11th

Apparently the bath I took yesterday did some good. This is the first instance of visible healing.
April 14th

It's doing really well! I picked off all the dead skin to reveal a deceptively small cut. Just a couple more days now...

I do love me some new knives! Rope cutters are my favorites. ^_^
Oddly enough...this is the first time I've ever cut myself.
I like all the different backgrounds for the thumb pictures.
I'm glad you appreciated that! Half the fun of the documentation was figuring out what the day's background was going to be. *grins*
Hey, looks like you're in the club.
It's not a result of the injury, I hope.
Clean slices are less likely to leave scars, so I've heard. So, new knives ftw?
Nice documentation, and thus, good completion.
