Web Map by niallsb: Forevolution

January 11th, 2008 11:57 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a map of the physical location of your favorite websites. You may wish to collaborate with someone from the Bay Area Rapid Transit Psychogeographical Association on this task. If possible, take a walking tour based on the map, either by going to the actual servers themselves, or by arbitrarily choosing locations to represent the different servers. If you do the latter, be sure to mark the location with its IP address, domain name or other relevant information.

As I’m a big fan of webcomics, I decided to make a map of the physical location of all the webcomics I read. I chose places from my hometown of Stanley (where I have current residence). As there are no servers in Stanley, the places I chose represent the webcomics.

Before I continue, as this is my first task, I want to define my character (and myself) a little bit.
Firstly, my character likes to wear jackets and robes. My character will often wear one when in SfØ movement, most likely this one:
niallsjacket37036.jpg
My character has a penchant for sticky notes (post-it notes) and uses them everywhere, even when completely unnecessary. My character sings to himself everywhere and loves to perform anytime, anypeople.

I must apologise for the pictures, all I have is a scanner, no camera.

I started by making a list of the webcomics I read then I went out to town (it’s village sized) centre to scope out which places would have relevance to my webcomics. I wrote a list of places down:
potentialplacel37041.jpg
I then went home and matched places and webcomics. This was harder than you’d think as a lot of the webcomics were geek or internet culture based and Stanley is a small town in rural Australia where the most culture you will find will be in the yoghurts in the MiniMart. I finally finished matching places up to webcomics:
webcomicsandthe37042.jpg
My next task was to create the map(s). My original idea was to use the markers in Google maps but Google Maps does not like it if your markers go up past the letter N. Go figure.

I printed out the maps and hand wrote the markers in + added a route of how to visit all the places on the map. I apologise for the crappy writing. Please forgive me. I hope you can read these.

I decided to walk around my route at night. Late at night. I left at 11:30pm.
Here are the places and their relative webcomics in the order I visited them:
map137037.jpgDinosaur Comics www.quantz.com (V)
I chose the ruins at the back of the wharf to begin my journey. The ruins would be the first place I would expect dinosaur remains or fossils to appear. I left my house with a pen, sticky notes and a reading light wearing my favourite jacket. My plan was to leave a sticky note at each location telling anybody who found them what each place reminded me of. They looked like this:
stickynote37027.jpg
As I got near the wharf I saw some men fishing. I stealthily sneaked past them. I’m sure I would have looked suspicious that late at night. I wrote up my sticky note by the light of my reading light and placed it in a hole in the wall next to the ruins.

Octopus Pie www.octopuspie.com (X)
Apart from the obvious octopus reference (which the webcomic has nothing to do with btw) the webcomic has used docks and piers as the occasional setting so it made sense for the Wharf to represent it.
I was aiming to place the sticky notes in inconspicuous places. In a big city, you have the anonymity of probably never coming across the same person often but in a small town, if I left a lot of sticky notes in broad daylight where everyone could see them, questions would be asked. And not the kind that SfØ tasks normally stimulate with NPCs. No, anonymity was the wise option in this case. Also, some of the webcomics are unsuitable for young viewer so I couldn’t write the URL. I decided to place each note where the casual observer would not spy it. Not too hidden, but not to open.
I placed this note underneath a wooden bar that was bolted in place to stop cars from driving into the ocean.

Cyanide & Happiness www.explosm.net (Y)
This location choice was as random as the webcomic is. You’ll have heaps of fun at both but very random choices. Cyanide & Happiness is a comic a day written by four very funny guys, making it hard to classify or pigeon hole. It’s as dynamic as the little jetty, which can be used for boarding boats, fishing or jumping off (not recommended at low tide, it is called the little jetty).
I placed my sticky note on a concrete pylon which was the only it would stick to.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal www.smbc-comics.com (W)
The MiniMart is just a smaller version of a supermarket really, but you can rent DVDs from it too. Choice was obvious.
When I got there: Shock Horror! My pen ran out! I did not foresee this. I decided not to abandon my midnight journey but I wanted to visit the locations in order so I decided to return to my house to get another pen or two. I was halfway home when my pen started working again. At the moment it’s leaking slightly, I think it hates me but it’s one of the few I have so…
I placed my note on the ice freezer, hidden by some ice crates.

map237038.jpgIDGet http://idget.comicgenesis.com (Z)
Admittedly some of the links between webcomic and place is tenuous but some comics just didn’t have good matches. The Golf Course (which I’m proud to say was designed by my grandfather, the famous John Toogood-he had a book written about him and his brother) represents IDGet because they are both very green. Really. Go and check.
I put the note behind a sign on the course (this golf course was funded by some local company blah-de-blah).

Player vs. Player www.pvponline.com ($)
The Recreation Ground is where all the sport is played. AFL, cricket… well that’s it but I’ve never been a big fan of sport so I don’t really care. The choice of location is again, pretty obvious.
I left a note in one of the shelters at the side of the oval. I found a hat laying there. I thought the owner might have left it there so I put a sticky note on it saying “I’m lost. Please find me a home.” Good luck Hattie!

Geek Blather http://geekblather.comicgenesis.com (%)
The next place on the walk was the Info Centre. It gives you touristy brochures for things to do in and around Stanley (if you ever visit Stanley, I’d advise going there. There is bugger-all to do here if you don’t know where to go). The only real link here is the word geek and the word info, but even that really isn’t that well constructed.
I placed my note inside a Coke vending machine that nobody uses.

Red String http://redstring.strawberrycomics.com (&)
Stanley Primary School was the school I went to for the first 7 years of my schooling life. Sheesh, that’s a long time. Red String is about students, even if their mean age is 16½.
I placed my sticky note in the new cubby house they have there (the age of students ranges from 5-12). We had a log cabin cubby back when I was 5 but I got taken away. Shame.

map337039.jpgNothing Better www.webcomicsnation.com/tylerpage/ (B)
First stop on the ironically named Church Street (all four churches are on Marshall Street, only one is on Church Street) is a church. St. Paul’s Anglican Church reminds me of Nothing Better. It’s a webcomic about the life of some college students but its main theme is religion and philosophy, so the main characters are always questioning their beliefs in between making out with each other. I make it sound much worse than it is; it’s definitely worth a look.
I placed my adhesive message on the back of an empty bird bath; poor birds.

Geeks Next Door www.geeksnextcomic.com (C)
The next destination is Providore 24, a shop that sells lesser known, local produce, like Tasmania jams, sauces, and chutneys as well as delicacies, chocolate, cheeses, that sort of thing. It also sells amazing homemade bread and pretty jewlery. My link to Geeks Next Door is from the popular quote that has been turned into a t-shirt: “I love you more than cheese!”
My sticky note was left stuck to a terracotta pot.

Questionable Content www.questionablecontent.net (E)
If I had to recommend a webcomic to somebody unfamiliar with the world of online strips, this would be the one. Perfectly written, very funny and updated every weekday. ¾ of webcomic artists would agree with me; the other ¼ would recommend their comic.
My association is with Touchwood, a souvenir shop and café. It is the place in Stanley you would go to have someone else make your coffee for you. In QC, the majority of the strips are based in the coffee shop, Coffee of Doom, which is owned by main character Dora, whose boyfriend Marten is the protagonist.
I left the note inside a sign stand.

Shortpacked! www.shortpacked.com (A)
Shortpacked focuses on the world of collecting action figures and dolls. Surprisingly this wasn’t as obvious then as it is now. Go figure.
I hid the post-it behind the wheelie bin.

Juvenile Diversion http://juvenilediversion.comicgenesis.com (F)
My personal favourite, it follows the story of six teens that have formed a band: Juvenile Diversion. The Town Hall is the only place that you can actually perform anything; it’s the only place with a stage.
I stuck the sticky to the back of a pretty snazzy looking chair outside the Town Hall.

Khaos Komix www.khaoskomix.com/home.html (G)
The next stop is at the Chocolate Shop. I’m beginning to get cold. Khaos Komix’s Steve, the first protagonist, is an excellent cook and often makes baked goodies. Okay, so the Chocolate Shop sells lollies, not baked goods, but cut me some slack here. The Chocolate Shop also sells ice-cream cones.
I climbed up a pole and stuck the note under the shop’s awning.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete www.ctrlaltdel-online.com (H)
CAD has a fair bit a fighting and warfare in it. It is a video game webcomic, which is a very popular type of comic. I thought it fitting to pair it with the War Memorial.
I left a note to the side of the memorial at the steps beside it.

Life on the Forth Floor www.forthfloorcomics.comicgenesis.com (I)
I chose the Stanley Hotel for this one. It’s about the only building with four floors in it.
I hid a note behind a potted plant outside the front door.

Wingmen http://wingmen.comicgenesis.com (I)
Wingmen is a comic focused on dating and being a wingman. The obvious choice for this would be the pub (bar). It’s where most of the webcomic is set.
This was the only note left in plain view, under a window. Although, telling people that are bar reminds me of wingmen seems hardly strange; so there you go.

Striptease www.stripteasecomic.com (J)
Across the road from the Hotel and the Pub is the Newsagent. It is the only place in town that, if you wish to purchase a comic book, you can. Striptease is about comic books and their illustrators + their friends, so it all fits.
I stuck a note between the side of the building and another ice freezer.

MegaTokyo www.megatokyo.com (K)
Stanley, despite being a small town, has managed to acquire an art gallery. It has artistic, yet functional furniture, lots of containers and bowls of varying aestheticness, a collection of blown glass ornament and some decorative jewellery. MegaTokyo is one of the most well drawn webcomics to date so I’m matching it with the art gallery.
I placed the post-it in an architrave along the front of the building.

webcomicposter37043.jpgindexed http://indexed.blogspot.com (L)
I feel very strongly that the postal service in most countries is underappreciated. It would do wonders for people's welbeing if they were to recieve a handwritten letter, don't you think?
Anyway, the post office relates to indexed, a webcomic that uses venn diagrams and simple graphs to make comments on life. They both use stationary, as indexed is hand-drawn onto lined paper, and both are methodical but very sweet.
I stuck the note near the Post Office Boxes that you can own if you don't have a mailbox or you want your mail to be safe.

Bag of Toast www.jeffcohenstudio.com/bagoftoast (M)
Do you like robotics? This guy does. As well as drawing or in some cases painting a great webcomic, he also builds fairly pointless robots, although he has built a robot that controls a Playstation that is controlled by a Wii remote. In other words, he is playing Playstation games with a Wii remote.
The places here is Moby Dick's Breakfast Bar. The connection comes from the name of the comic.
Placed the note to the underside of a metre box.

Animals Have Problems Too www.animalshaveproblemstoo.com (N)
There's a path at Stanley that's on a nature reserve. Sure, you're not going to see a hell of a lot of animals but you certainly will here them. This track makes for the best evening, starlight walks in Stanley, as long as you wear closed shoes so you don't get prickled by prickles.
The connection is obvious and I hid the note behind a Tasmanian wilderness sign.

Anders Loves Maria http://anderslovesmaria.reneengstrom.com (O)
There is one major thing about Stanley I haven't mentioned yet, something that sets it apart from other towns. It is a really big rock:

Pleased to be in it. Aren't you the potential winner of Interrex? Good luck with that!

Wow! After this, I want to read all those webcomics and go to Stanley, even if the most culture you will find will be in the yoghurts in the MiniMart.
My condolences for the log cabin cubby.
Fantastic task, first or not first. Precise post-it placement. Welcome.

Thankyou very much.

For those of you wondering, my computer went beserk halfway through this task. I'm very sorry.
I'll try to finish the praxis off now...

It makes me happy to think of these little notes you have left in these kind of free association locations.
