Fortune Not Cookie by Quadlex

June 23rd, 2010 11:03 PM / Location: -27.60658,153.11010

INSTRUCTIONS: Install fortunes of your devising in permanent or non-permanent media in openable structures, such that passersby will come across them.

I wanted my fortunes to have the experience inevitable with opening a fortune cookie. Will it be random? Will it be bad news, or good news? Will it be in English, Chinese, a broken combination of the two?

Contrariwise, there is some predictibility in a fortune cookie. You're unlikely to get anything meaningful. You will understand it, but most likely not be impressed. By its very nature you have an inkling what's inside, even if you have to destroy the wrapping to get to the filling.

I also wanted to replicate some of the features of the cookie itself: Glossy finish, individual wrapping, carbohydrate based nature and in-edibility (Even if edible, the cookies are never palatable).

What replicates the ability to open a dry, flavorless shell that's uniquely yours, and discover any manner of thing inside? Something that hints at its contents but remains mum until rent in twain and no longer "in factory condition"? Something that's ubiquitous but nevertheless makes you feel slightly special to receive?

Mail.

Specifically, that mail which is not mine, but will nevertheless be recieved by someone on the other end. Mail that's to be returned to sender.

So, collecting some of the RTS mail around the house, I made fortunes:

But! Front of the letter? Hardly, that's for the RTS information. Back of the letter!

7 Letters had fortunes applied, meaning 7 mailroom staff will be given the privilige of 7 different fortunes. I like to think they'll change something.

Welcome to the game!

(although a lot of the pictures don't show up, which might be a problem on my end, but maybe good to look into)

Good task, my friend; It runs on the same vein as Lincoln's "Naked Mail" praxis, which was pretty epic too. Clever using RTS, by the way, as I'm sure it saved a bit on stamps. If you're in contact with anyone you sent back to (which I doubt, but alas), you ought to update with what happened, if anything.
