It works even better if you leave the greens on one end, so that you have something to hold while cutting.

This will be quick, but not necessarily free from tears. To be free from tears make the following adjustments:

1. The weird part at the bottom produces most of the acidic gas, leave this alone and most onions will let you do whatever you want with them.

2. Alternatively, or if this isn't enough, put a wet cloth around your neck. The water will absorb the gas instead.

P.S.: don't touch your eyes.
