Ashes

Ashes

My family has has several bonfires lately, and we set the fires up in this metal basin with a grill on the outside to keep the debris in one place.

overflow

overflow

I was looking at how it was filled past the top with ashes, and I thought "I bet I could make a paint out of that!"

gathering

gathering

I scooped some up, and sifted out the larger chunks.

enough

enough

Until I felt that there was enough to make a fair bit of paint.

Tools

Tools

So with a paintbrush and some quick sketches I set out to work.

mush

mush

I poured some water in the ashes and used my hand to stir. Mixing was the fun part.

so empty

There is this plain old fence that could definately use some decoration.

beginning

beginning

So with that I dipped my brush into my paint, and began to grafitti

paint away

paint away

It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. The color would run out of my brush after a very short space, so I had to dip and brush, dip and brush, dip and brush quite a bit.

the results

the results

I went with some simple animals, a rabbit and a squirrel...

some more

some more

A sheep and a turtle...

six altogether

A swan and a very sorry looking owl.

As a whole

As a whole

So here is my lovely menagerie of animal friends all done in a completely organic paint. I wonder if it will wash away when it rains?

Or you could mix more ashes with some fat and try to make your own soap for reverse graffiti!

interesting that ashes, so close to charcoal, the original drawing medium, aren't more often thought of as an art supply. good show.
