Discovering What Doesn't Change by Samantha

June 24th, 2009 11:49 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Find something untouched by the ravages of time; something the same as it was in the past.

I thought about this task for a long while before I was inspired by any ideas.

What in this ever-changing world remains the same for any length of time. The world needs change to grow and improve, or else it will stagnate. And after much thought I believe I have found an answer to the question.

So here in these photos is a tale of moss, 100 years, and epiphanies.

Graveyard

Graveyard

What doesn't change? After much contemplation I decided that with the proper care, tombstones of important people would be preserved throughout the years.

Best Standing

Best Standing

This gravemarker was one of the oldest and most unchanged tombstones in my local cemetery. It was installed in 1893, over 100 years ago, yet it still looks brand new.

Repairs

Repairs

This one dates back to 1883, and the top pillar was recently replaced. This could be construed as a change in material, yet it is still visually the same.

Importance of upkeep

Importance of upkeep

This is one of the oldest tombstones there, and it is serious disrepair. It is crackling and crumbling, and currently being overrun by moss.

Worn away

Worn away

The wind, rain and snow have worn the stone away so much that there are almost no words left that can be deciphered.

Fancy carvings

Fancy carvings

These people were able to afford a memorial carved statue like grave marker. It dates back to 1885, and the deeper creases have blackened with age.

All of these tombstones were fairly untouched by the ravages of time, but they weren't exactly the same as when they were first installed. I wasn't feeling too confident about these objects, and as I was driving home, it hit me, the perfect thing.

Inspiration strikes!

Inspiration strikes!

In an unobtrusive place right near my old middle school, lies an object that had until recently lain dormant in the back of my mind. I sped right over there to see if it was still untacked and lo! After much searching and snooping around there it was. A little plaque in the ground set in concrete. Yet this little sheet of metal marked the location to something TRILY untouched by the ravages of time...

Frozen Time!

Frozen Time!

That's right! A time capsule! This is a physical manifestation of past that will remain unchanged for 100 years. The items inside the time capsule are preserved items of the past and will remain the same until the year 2076 when it will be opened.

Untouched, the same.

Untouched, the same.

This is the past, and will stay exactly the same for 100 years, until farther into the future.

Ooooh a time capsule! Those things intrigue me so much! I wish we could have a sneek peak already!
