I've often thought of subway tunnels as being like the roots of the steel Yggdrasil, but I'm not sure what the trunk would be...

Trees can have more than juts one trunk. The same individuum is connected by its roots.

Subway systems to me always more resembled fungus than trees- all crisscrossing veins and twisting arterial madness underground, splitting the surface here and there with bizarrely similar outcroppings. Only once you dig the whole thing up do you realize its all part of the same entity.
