[He] wears the black for the poor and beaten down... +1

Level 0 Completion

This lyric from the oft-referenced "Man in Black" was used in a response to an assignment for Shakespeare's Hamlet. The question had to do with why Gertrude and Claudius were upset with Hamlet, during the wedding, and what he was wearing.

The response:

4. Hamlet wears mourning clothes to the wedding, to grieve for his father. He wears the black for the poor and the beaten down, such as his father who has been murdered. This bothers Gertrude and Claudius because they find it inappropriate for a wedding. Claudius urges Hamlet to stop grieving, because, as he states, “your father lost a father; that father lost, lost his…” All sons will lose their fathers.
