How come the scene he's painting bears little, in fact no, resemblance to the scene he's painted?
The man is in fact wearing contact lenses. He needs a special prescription for distance vision, but he has it in. And it's enabling to paint the far shore, on the other side of that ocean. He's painted it exactly right, too, down to some very tiny details.
I just thought he was remembering low tide.
