The Death of Public Life In The Age of Insatiability by HKEY_Current _User

February 23rd, 2008 11:51 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document all the public actions you take in a day. Additionally, document all the private actions you take that same day.

Graph your actions.

Preface

I hypothesize that I take very few public actions on any given day. I am the type that watches puddles gather rain. To avoid an overly boring completion, red flagged as merely perfunctory, I intend to choose a day of a big event.

There are at least two problems with that:

  1. I'm pretty lazy. Also forgetful. When I know something big is coming, like buying a new car or taking a big road trip, I usually don't even think of this stuff. Not that I have all that much on my mind, just that tasking never occurs to me.

  2. If something big happens spontaneously, how can you possibly predict it?

For better or for worse, I choose to start this task on a work day, which will at least guarantee public actions. I set out ideas long ago, about how to document actions textually. They are included for your consideration.

Audio is not easy to capture. I have a microphone on my computer, but that won't help much. I have a tape recorder, but no tapes. I will probably be unable to capture audio, and instead will likely resort to keeping detailed transcripts of notable conversations, that is, if I remember and have time to do it.

I do not have a video camera, except for my webcam.

This should be a sufficient summary of what to expect. I only hope I can remember to do this.

Submission

The written documentation exists in two forms: handwritten and digital. I am lazy, so I simply scanned in the handwritten ones.

I was not able to record video or audio for the chosen day. I briefly considered documenting the first four hours of this morning (2/23/08) to get a full twenty-four hours. I figured that would be awkward.

Here is a graph of my actions:
In case you can't see it, the blue bars represent private actions, and the red bars public actions. The x-axis is time in hours, and the y-axis is actions per hour.

Afterthought

Man, I got really lazy with this really quickly. Anyway, I guess I was right. I really don't get out much.

Addendum: Transcript of scanned records.

10:39 AM Woke up, thought about "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, urinated, found paper and pencil, and checked the time.

(Henceforth, checking the time is understood.)

10:42 Began looking for my old calculator watch.

10:45 Found a metric conversion card, decided to give up looking.

≈ 10:50 Logged into computer and checked my rules.

10:51 Wondered about my use of commas.

10:53 Accepted this new interpretation as superior.

10:54 Began to wonder which actions I would actually consider the virtue of.

10:55 Revision of above statement: "Began to wonder of which actions I would actually consider the virtue."

10:56 Decision to start text file for tasks actions completed around PC.

11:42 (?) Went inside to get macrofilter.

12:26 My mission complete, I take time to relax, stare at my Electric Sheep screensaver, and regain feeling in my extremities.

12:31 I think that I should take pictures at work. I would either need to take a cheaper camera with me (than the one I used on my truck), or leave my D50 in my truck for much of the time that I am there.

Problems:

  • Tripod or no?

  • Which lens?

  • Isn't there something else I do there? I forget what, but my boss has given me a lot of mean looks lately.

  • Am I even driving there?

  • My SD card is nearly full.

12:36 I decide to check the status of my pictures and SD cards.

12:38 Brief detour to read the Lisp article.

1:05 Went to get something to drink.

1:39 Finished editing the first photo.

2:40 Urinated and shaved.

3:32 Finished watching Judge Alex, which was on while I ate my Hot Pocket. Had a nice conversation with my mother simultaneously about our hick-ass family could've done the same things.

≈ 3:35 Guitar exercise stopped. Tempo was 120 bpm.

(This is followed by an illustration of fingering patterns. The one on the left would have the first finger on the first fret, second on the third, and third on the fifth.)

3:37 Going to go think.

3:39 Urinated. Considering shower.

3:45 Looked for the definition of "∩". I think it is intersection.

4:07 Looking up glb & lub on the Internet.

4:10 glb = greatest lower bound
lub = least upper bound
lub ≤ {SET} ≤ glb

4:15 Also clarified difference between (proper subset symbol) & (subset symbol).
{x : P(x)} means {x| P(x)} (set building)

4:41 Revised understanding of glb & lub.

{all other lower bounds} ≤ glb ≤ {SET} ≤ lub ≤ {all other upper bounds}

Which really makes a lot more sense.

4:56 Going to take a quick shower.

5:12 Shower completed.  BONUS: I am wearing clothes.

5:13 I sit down to try and finish my exam.

5:14 I decide to do it later.  Guitar time, again.

5:27 Ended exercise, departing for work.

5:43 Arrived at work and clocked in.

5:55 Put ice in glasses.

6:31 Finished rolling silverware.

7:10 Since there's nothing to do right now, I will try some blind contour & gesture drawings.

7:53 "Carry on My Wayward Son" outro.

8:11 Urinated.  (NOTE: Not publicly.)

8:58 Work is done, clocked out.

≈9:00 Rode home with waitress, invited to her house

9:26 Drinking Canada Dry and watching Norton run another pointless scan.

9:39 Singing Bullet w/ Butterfly Wings.

11:49 PM Went to bed.

Those photos are exactly what I was talking about with the DADA 2 task.

That's weird, because I thought of that task while I was cropping down my photos.

My eyes hurt from trying to read those scans :(

But I figured out things like "wondering about the use of commas" and "considering shower". I guess blue bars are full of jewels (a transcript? please? the task is completed fine, but how about our picked curiosities?).
I´ll vote then, sure (bribe votes feel so immoral, I´ll vote now!).

I fixed the problem, but so far I've only added a transcript of the scanned pages, and not the text file.

Oh, sorry, it took me a month to come back here and read it all. Thanks a lot, it is fantastic! Great to see you at the team too.
